The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is entering a new era, but our story began in 1939, when Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Hay-Farrally arrived in Winnipeg with an ambitious vision to bring ballet to the prairies.
What began as the Winnipeg Ballet Club would go on to become Canada’s first professional ballet company and, in 1953, receive the first Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth II during her reign.
For more than 85 years, we’ve evolved alongside the artists, students, audiences, and communities who have shaped us. Now, as we begin a new chapter under the leadership of Christopher Stowell and Elena Tupyseva, we’re welcoming new possibilities for what ballet can be.
Our new brand reflects what has always made RWB distinctive: an adventurous spirit, a willingness to take risks and a drive to keep pushing the art form forward. It honours that spirit with a bold, expressive new identity — one that builds on our remarkable legacy while creating space for new ideas, new audiences and what comes next.
