🖤 New project!

I’m continuing my Critters series with this little mouse enjoying a moment among the flowers. 🐭🌸

First step: the sketch. ✏️
Let’s see where this one takes me!

✏️ Not all graphite pencils are the same!

Have you ever wondered why artists use so many different pencils?

From soft, dark B pencils to harder H pencils, each one creates a different value, texture and level of detail.

Here’s a quick look at the graphite pencils I use and what I use them for. 🖤

Which one would you use first?

✨ Light of the Soul, Heart of a Woman ✨

A graphite portrait created earlier this year, part of my ongoing portrait series exploring the depth and complexity of human emotions.

Through shadows, silence, and expression, I love searching for what lies beneath the surface, vulnerability, strength, softness, wounds… and the quiet light that lives within us.

A face. An emotion. A story. 🖤

Wonder woman is not a fictional character. Wonder woman is a mindset.

The most uncomfortable realization a person can have is that their honesty is often a social liability. Franz Kafka captured this feeling of exposure when he wrote: I was ashamed of myself when I realized life was a costume party and I attended with my real face.

Kafka was an expert in the art of the double life. By day, he was a high-level official at an insurance institute in Prague, navigating the rigid structures of early 20th-century bureaucracy. By night, he was a writer exploring the deepest corners of the human psyche. He understood that society functions on a set of unwritten rules where everyone agrees to wear a mask. To show up with your real face is to break the spell, revealing a level of vulnerability that others often find jarring or inappropriate.

It is a strange paradox that the very thing we claim to value—authenticity—is often what we are most ashamed to reveal in public spaces. Kafka’s legacy is built on the fact that he eventually chose to stop hiding his inner world, even if he originally requested that his manuscripts be burned after his death. His work remains a testament to the friction between our private truths and our public performances.

Are you wearing a mask today, or did you show up with your real face?

Sometimes you need to take a break from everyone and spend time alone, to experience, appreciate and love yourself. Robert Tew
