What is the sacred’s hue, texture, form? How is it perceived and expressed through art? A wonderfully alive quality of the sacred is that it refuses tethers—a quality shared by great art. In this group exhibition, the art works hold the potential to tell us something about where the sacred might be found, whether this is outside ourselves or within.

Quelle est la teinte, la texture, la forme du sacré? Comment est-il perçu et exprimé à travers l’art? L’une des qualités les plus saisissantes du sacré est qu’il refuse toute contrainte – tout comme le grand art. Dans cette exposition collective, les œuvres d’art ont le pouvoir de nous révéler où se trouve le sacré, que ce soit à l’extérieur ou à l’intérieur de nous-mêmes.

À la fois singuliers et énigmatiques, dynamiques et économiques, les dessins de Roger LaFrenière témoignent d’une profonde sensibilité aux qualités formelles du territoire manitobain. La Galerie Buhler Gallery est fière de présenter en première une sélection de ses dessins réalisés au graphite et au fusain entre la fin des années 1970 et le début des années 2000. La rapidité autant que la géométrie façonnent ces œuvres, qui révèlent combien le paysage est en perpétuelle transformation. Dans ces dessins inédits, nous voyons LaFrenière poursuivre l’instant qui sépare un clignement d’yeux du suivant.

Distinctive yet enigmatic, dynamic and simple, Roger LaFrenière’s drawings express a great sensitivity to the formal qualities of the land in Manitoba. In this exhibition, Galerie Buhler Gallery proudly premieres a selection of his drawings made with graphite and charcoal between the late 1970s to early 2000s. Rapidity as well as geometry shape these works and they reveal how a view of landscape contains constant change. In these never-before-seen drawings, we witness LaFrenière chasing the instant between one blink and the next.
