AWE recently learned of the passing of Saskatchewan artist, David Thauberger (1948-2026). Known for his hyper-realistic depictions of his home province, his work captures life on the Prairies while sparking debate about how we see the world beyond a regional context.

In 2008, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to Canadian art. The following year, in 2009, he was also honoured with the Lieutenant Governor’s Saskatchewan Art Award.

We join the country in mourning the loss of Thauberger and share this piece by him from the AWE collection.

Kiakshuk (1886 – May 3, 1966) was a Canadian Inuk artist who worked both in sculpture and printmaking. He was a well-known storyteller and was highly respected for his ability to translate oral histories and tales of the hunt, animals, families and spirits into graphic media*. This lovely print, named 'Summer Camp Scene', features children playing amongst bears and stones.

If you're visiting the gallery this week, you'll notice that our education studio is more lively than usual! Our summer camps have officially begun last week, and if you're looking for day camp options, we have 4 more dates in August: 4th, 5th, 25th, & 26th.
