The Mermaid

The Mermaid Events and information about The Mermaid, Windsor, Nova Scotia's original entertainment venue.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia purchased the vacant Imperial Theatre at 106 Gerrish Street in 2003, right next door to the facility we had occupied since 1987. Since then, a number of improvements have been undertaken to the facility with assistance from local, provincial, and federal funding. The renewed Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre began offering an annual Entertainment Series startin

g in 2007. MIPAC has played host to a number of distinguished artists from across Canada. Celebrated artists like Bruce Cockburn, George Canyon, Matt Andersen, Joe Sealy, Joel Plaskett, and Jill Barber have all performed on our stage. The theatre is used for many purposes, including rehearsals for Mermaid’s own flagship productions; it is rented by a variety of community groups for events both public and private; it has been used for movie location filming; and Mermaid has begun using the theatre for school-time matinee performances for the benefit of area students and preschoolers, bringing world-class theatre to children from all around the Annapolis Valley.

Drawing from Atwood’s 2020 poetry collection Dearly, this evocative project weaves together classical and jazz trio idioms to create a rich musical language that is as haunting as it is beautiful. Davis’s settings transform seven of Atwood’s poems — Zombie, Blizzard, Health Class, Princess Clothing, Shadow, Digging up the Scythians, and Dearly — into art songs that balance elegance with raw emotional power.

This is a 19+ show beginning at 8PM, with the bar opening at 7PM. Come enjoy a great evening and experience the newly renovated theatre! The bar will be serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Good luck!

Don't miss Epidermis Circus.
Produced by SNAFU.
Performed by Fraggle Rock Puppeteer Ingrid Hansen
Co-Created and Directed by Ride the Cyclone director Britt Small
Costume by JIMBO the Drag Clown, Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race

An “enormously entertaining, one-hour madcap vaudeville show. It is chock full of riotous, naughty, and mystifying vignettes using her bare hands, her face, her mouth, tiny toys, and a doll’s head. Hansen's hands-in-motion have the kind of presence that is often attributed to the greatest stage performers, and their movement, combined with her skill for vocalization, establishes colorful characters playing out their scenarios -- transfixing the audience, and creating pin-drop silence interspersed with spontaneous bursts of laughter.” - Culture Catch NYC

An intimate and powerful collaboration between soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, author Margaret Atwood, and composer Aaron Davis. Drawing from the 7 poems of Atwood’s 2020 poetry collection Dearly (Blizzard, Health Class, Princess Clothing, Shadow, Digging up the Scythians, and Dearly), this evocative project blends classical and jazz idioms to explore grief, gender, humour, and survival in a changing world. With Atwood’s voice featured in recorded recitations, the electric live music from a jazz trio, and Measha’s luminous interpretations of Davis’ settings, Zombie Blizzard is a spellbinding meditation on the art of resilience.
