It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of our dear friend, artist, and community member, Lauren Satok, on May 21, 2026.

Lauren came to Manitoulin Island and generously shared her gifts, creativity, and spirit with the arts community and with Debajehmujig Storytellers. Through her art, kindness, and dedication, she made meaningful connections and left a lasting impact on many people.

In 2025, Lauren was recognized with the Volunteer of the Year Award at Debajehmujig Volunteer Gala for her commitment and contributions to our community. She also participated in our Six Foot Festival for many years. She shared her powerful exhibition, Unsettled, which invited reflection, conversation, and connection through art.

We are deeply grateful for the time, creativity, and heart Lauren shared with us. Her presence will be greatly missed, but her artistic spirit and the relationships she built here on Manitoulin will continue to live on.

On behalf of Debajehmujig Storytellers and the wider arts community, we send our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Lauren’s family, friends, loved ones, and all who were touched by her life and work.

We at Debajehmujig Storytellers are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Cris Derksen.

On behalf of our Board, staff, artists, and the wider arts community, we extend our heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers to her family, loved ones, collaborators, and all those whose lives were touched by her music, spirit, and artistry.

Her powerful voice through music inspired many across communities and generations, and her contributions to Indigenous arts and storytelling will continue to resonate deeply.

We hold her loved ones close in our hearts during this difficult time and honour the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
