Arts Underground

Arts Underground The central hub for artists and art lovers in Whitehorse & Yukon, operated by the Yukon Art Society. The Yukon Art Society was founded in April of 1970.

Not only is it the oldest visual arts organization in the Yukon, but with a membership of around 150 members, it is the largest. The size and longevity of this grassroots organization can be explained in part by its inclusiveness policy. All artists are welcome to join.

*Experience Required: Registrants must have completed a Ceramics Level 1 course or have the equivalent experience. *

This course is designed for studio users who have completed the Ceramics Level 1 course and are ready to further develop their throwing skills through structured practice and a series of fun drills. This course is targeted specifically at developing throwing technique, and as such, trimming and glazing will not specifically be addressed in the course. Participants will keep a limited number of pieces from this class, as cutting our pieces in half or pushing the clay to its limits will be an important part of the learning process.

A reminder that the deadline to submit work for our July members' exhibition, 'I'd Rather Be Outside', is next Saturday, June 27!

Pieces must be at the gallery on or before this date to be included in the exhibition. All work will be reviewed by the curator before display to ensure it meets all our display guidelines and is ready to be hung.

For this year’s summertime members’ exhibition, Yukon Art Society Members are invited to submit works that showcase their favourite things about summer. Landscapes, florals, animals, and summer-inspired colours are all welcome!

This exhibition will be on view in both the Focus and Edge galleries from July 3 - August 1.

Artists are invited to bring the following:

Two-Dimensional/Wall Hanging Work
- One large piece (bigger than 20”x20”)
- Up to two medium pieces (10”x10” - 20”x20”)
- Up to three pieces smaller than 10”x10”

Three-Dimensional Work
- Up to two large pieces (must be able to fit on a plinth, max. 2’x2’)
- Up to three small pieces (ie. cups, bowls, jewellery, clothing items)

If you’re unsure if your piece would fit the theme or size requirements, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

*Experience Required: Registrants should be comfortable with basics of centering, opening and shaping on the wheel*

This workshop is designed for throwers ready to scale up. Participants will move beyond small forms and learn the techniques required to throw larger and taller pieces, working with 3–15 lb balls of clay. The class covers spiral wedging, slap centering, coning, and the body, arm, and hand positioning that make heavy clay manageable. Participants will practice wall compression, keeping an even rim, a range of pulling and collaring techniques, and shaping with ribs to refine their forms.

Note that the class is focused on throwing. Trimming and glazing can be done during the class if you have pieces from the previous weeks. The instructor can assist in trimming and glazing, but the focus for the class is throwing.

Last night we were excited to welcome Vancouver Island-based guest instructor John Blackmore for the first of three workshops he's teaching this weekend exploring the “wet on wet” oil painting technique. Here's a look at the great work the students were doing!

This series of workshops were made possible by the generous support of the Government of Yukon's Community Development Fund. An additional thank you to The Sternwheeler Hotel for their support.

"Shiela is Yukon born and raised, and has spent her adult life off grid in rural Yukon. It is important to Shiela that she enjoys her days fully – her family, art, gardens, and animal friends are all part of the mosaic of her life. Art enables her to translate some of the pleasure of being alive into a form that is solid. The beauty that she lives with each day in the Yukon’s wilderness is the material that she uses, and the colours that she is drawn to. Shiela creates art as a way to celebrate the power and wonder of the natural world, and all that it offers to her. "
