Arts Underground

Arts Underground The central hub for artists and art lovers in Whitehorse & Yukon, operated by the Yukon Art Society. The Yukon Art Society was founded in April of 1970.

Not only is it the oldest visual arts organization in the Yukon, but with a membership of around 150 members, it is the largest. The size and longevity of this grassroots organization can be explained in part by its inclusiveness policy. All artists are welcome to join.

In this 7 week Ceramic Level 1 class, potter Lisa Moore will teach all the foundational skills required for wheel throwing, from start to finish. This class includes learning to wedge and centre clay, throwing basic shapes and vessels, and dip glazing. We’ll learn the terminology, techniques, and studio safety so you can keep practicing on your own. Upon completion of this class participants will have the skills and experience necessary to book studio time and work in the studio unsupervised.

Block Printing with Martha Jane Ritchie
Saturday, October 17 & Sunday, October 18 | 10:00am – 3:30pm (2 sessions)
$25+GST/Person | Supplies Included
Ages 16+
*Location: St. Elias Community School in Haines Junction*

This programming was made possible through the generous support of the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society (WCTSS) and their Sharing Our Success (SOS) funding program.

In this two-day workshop participants will get a brief introduction to relief printmaking and have an opportunity to carve and print their own design. We will explore some of the potential materials for relief printing blocks and experiment with using them on both paper and fabric. Block printing is a simple process that can easily be done at home and requires a minimum of materials and space. It is a great way to make your own cards, repurpose old textiles or give a new look to your wardrobe. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own pieces of clothing or fabric to reimagine.

How long have you been practising art/did you pursue an art degree?

“My education is in psychology (though I did take one amazing visual art course in university) and I've worked in mental health and harm reduction for most of my life. I've been making art in some form since I was a little kid, but for a long time, it was something I did intermittently. It's only more recently that I've had the capacity to focus seriously on my artwork and develop a more intentional practice.”
