Established in 2016, the Audain Art Museum is a leading arts organization founded upon the major philanthropic gift of Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa. Located in Whistler, British Columbia and designed by the internationally-renowned firm Patkau Architects, the AAM boasts a compr

ehensive Permanent Collection of the province’s most celebrated artists. Exemplifying the richness of cultural difference in Canada, the collection takes visitors on a transformative visual journey from the late 18th century to present. Highlights include hereditary Haida Chief James Hart’s The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), an exceptional collection of historical Indigenous masks, and key examples of the Vancouver photo conceptualism movement. In addition, the Museum hosts dynamic exhibitions from around the world.

Thank you to everyone who joined the Museum for the opening events of ‘Takao Tanabe 100: Inside Passage’.

Between moments of connection, reflection, curatorial talks, and even a few visits from the artist himself, the Museum became a vibrant space for celebrating the arts and the incredible impact Takao has made on them.

“I am trying to create new forms based on nature so that I can see the world in a new way,” Takao said on CBC Vancouver’s ‘The Lively Arts’ in 1961. We can only hope visitors leave the exhibition inspired by that same spirit of seeing the world anew.

‘Takao Tanabe 100: Inside Passage’ is now on view through October 19, 2026 at the Audain Art Museum before being presented at the National Gallery of Canada Musée des beaux-arts du Canada and Art Gallery of Greater Victoria through 2026-2027.

In ‘Brady’s Beach near Bamfield, BC’ (1960), E.J. Hughes captures the rugged beauty of Vancouver Island’s west coast through his distinctive visual language of bold outlines, sweeping forms, and rich colour harmonies. Rather than painting the landscape exactly as it appears, Hughes distilled the essence and atmosphere of place - transforming Brady’s Beach into a rhythmic, deeply personal interpretation of British Columbia’s coastal landscape.

Painted during a pivotal period in Hughes’ career, the work reflects his enduring fascination with remote coastal communities and the natural environments that shaped BC identity.

Today, Hughes’ works remain a cornerstone of the Permanent Collection at the Audain Art Museum, where visitors can experience an exceptional collection of his works on permanent view.

Takao Tanabe’s fascination with landscapes comes vividly to life through his travels across British Columbia, North America, the Arctic, and Europe. With his camera always at hand, he journeyed widely to explore the wonders of places that sparked his curiosity and creative drive. Tanabe captured their geographical features and unique atmosphere, translating them into paintings in his studio that balance careful observation with poetic reflection. His works invite quiet contemplation, as if he listens intently to the land itself.⁠
