Thank you for joining us at the West Vancouver Memorial Library for the BIG IDEAS event last Friday!

This inspiring conversation between curator Pantea Haghighi and acclaimed architect Venelin Kokalov touched on the formative experiences that shaped Kokalov’s life and career. From studying architecture and growing up in Bulgaria under the guidance of his master builder father to immigrating to Vancouver and spending 14 influential years working alongside Bing Thom, Kokalov reflected on the personal and professional journey that led to the founding of Revery Architecture. The conversation also offered insight into the studio’s creative process, the ideas, and inspirations that continue to shape its vision, and the core principles that define its approach to architecture.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the West Vancouver Art Museum’s annual West Coast Modern Week, this concurrent exhibition revisits the 2006 exhibition that inspired the home tour. Presented in partnership with the West Vancouver Memorial Library, the displayed pieces explore the post-war, mid-century modernism of West Vancouver architecture, highlighting the works of prominent local architects of the era. Through the lens of photographers Selwyn Pullan and John Fulker, 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 features a curated selection of architectural photographs alongside a display of 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 magazines, both drawn from the museum’s collection.

Enjoy a glimpse into the beautiful Fells House, which is part of our upcoming West Coast Modern Week Home Tour. It was designed by Ron Thom in 1958 and thoughtfully renovated by D'Arcy Jones Architects in 2025.

Thom's design emphasizes the connection to the natural landscape, contrasting the rocky outcropping of the site with sharp angles, but artfully maintaining an interplay of features, nestling the house into the rock.

D’Arcy Jones Architects repaired both the structure and cedar cladding to
maintain the original character of the house, that had fallen into disrepair. The
character and detailing that Thom had intended for the 1966 addition was added back and continued on a new low-slung addition. This move, along with updating the windows, remains in keeping with the principles of Thom’s architecture, integrating the natural outdoor space into the home.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of 𝘏𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵 𝘐, the historic United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in Vancouver. The events of summer 1976 included art, workshops, and speeches by activists and thought leaders of the time.

One of the pavilions hosting 𝘏𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵 𝘐 was designed by Arthur Erickson and featured a canopy of hand-painted papier-mâché panels. The environmentally friendly structure was located on the north plaza of the former courthouse, which is now the Vancouver Art Gallery.

"I wanted a pavilion to demonstrate something to visiting delegates and I got a brain wave: that it should be recycled waste from a basic BC product. The first thing I thought of was paper. Four paper shells, six hyperbolic paraboloids made of five laminations of old newspaper reinforced with one of cotton, like cheesecloth, were simple and built by schoolchildren. The paper tubing for the edges caused us lots of trouble."

Start them young and let them dream!

Our school programs foster the understanding and appreciation of art, architecture, and design with children and youth. In art and architecture classes and camps, the participants are encouraged to explore, experiment, and share the fun of learning about art by engaging with our exhibitions.

The current exhibition 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, guest-curated by Adele Weder, particularly invites hands-on activities for students, who produce their own sketches and models. Together, we share the value of promoting future talents.
