Snowblind: World Premiere Opera Workshop in Concert

🗓️ Sunday, October 25, 2025
⏰ 3:00 PM
📍 The Registry Theatre

World Premiere opera in concert, inspired by the description of the NWT by Kathleen McDonald with details from the book A Discovery of Strangers by Rudi Wiebe and Narratives of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea by Dr. John Richardson. NUMUS is excited to be involved in this retelling of John Franklin’s first visit to the Northwest Territories in 1820. We celebrate Boyd McDonald.

Support the development of an exciting new work of contemporary music: Snowblind is composer Boyd McDonald’s first opera and was inspired by his mother’s trip to the arctic in the 1960’s. The libretto by Ed Jewinski is based on the story of the first Franklin expedition to the arctic in 1819-1822.

Described as “outstanding - no, make that astonishing!” (Ottawa Citizen) and as having a “sense of unbreakable continuity and energy” (Toronto Star), Canada’s TorQ Percussion Quartet continues to bring new vitality to percussion repertoire and performance. Richard Burrows, Adam Campbell, Jamie Drake and Daniel Morphy have given recital tours across Canada, and internationally in USA, Luxembourg and Germany. They’ve performed at Ottawa Chamberfest, Open Ears Festival, Indian River Festival, Stratford Summer Music, the Music Garden Toronto, the Canadian Opera Company concert series, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and many others. They have also performed as a featured soloist with the Toronto Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Orchestra Symphonique de Montréal (for which they were awarded the Prix Opus from the Quebec Music Council), Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Chamber Choir, amongst others.

TorQ is committed to developing and performing Canadian music: they have premiered over 80 pieces (including three concertos) by composers such as Nicole Lizée, Christos Hatzis, Michael Oesterle and Dinuk Wijeratne, and each ensemble member also contributes compositions and arrangements. They have released four albums on their own label BedointRecords and two albums through Redshift Records including a collaboration with the acclaimed Elora Singers. Their recording (with soloist Ben Reimer) of Lizée’s “Katana of Choice” was nominated for a 2019 Juno for “Classical Composition of the Year.”

TorQ endorses Yamaha Percussion, Innovative Percussion, Dream Cymbals, Black Swamp Percussion and Remo Percussion.
