University of Waterloo (UWAG) In 2010, the gallery was renovated and revitalized by Director/Curator, Ivan Jurakic.

The University of Waterloo Art Gallery (UWAG) was established in 1964 and is located in East Campus Hall (ECH), adjacent to the Fine Arts Department. UWAG engages both the campus and community-at-large with an annual slate of exhibitions featuring recent work by significant emerging and mid-career artists from across Canada and abroad. The exhibitions program strikes a critical balance by remainin

g responsive to our vibrant regional arts scene while exploring aspects critical to the expanded field of contemporary art as they occur on a national and international level. Our exhibitions, opening receptions and events are free and open to the public from September to May. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday to Friday from noon to 5:00 pm by appointment. Located in East Campus Hall at 263 Phillip Street off of University Avenue West, behind University Shops Plaza. Use South entrance to ECH across from Engineering 6. Limited meter parking is available behind ECH. Visitor Parking is available daily in Lot E6 and Lot E5 or Lot B after 3:45 pm. Cost $5.00

Quilts, textiles, text and more! Our Fall exhibitions were a huge hit with our attendees and offered students and visitors a unique opportunity to rest and reflect on the artwork.

𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙗𝙚𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙞𝙙: 𝙐𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙖𝙮 and 𝘼𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙬 𝙈𝙘𝙋𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙡: 𝙏𝙀𝙓𝙏𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙨, 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙄𝘿𝙎 𝙌𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙩 were shown from Septemer-December of the 2025 year where were we offered artist talks, a special nap session for Brenda's work, and opened the doors to show Andrew's work for a Day WITH(out) Art in honour of World AIDS Day. Thanks to everyone who came out to these events!

Fun fact, over the fall term, we had a total of 135 nappers take a load off in 𝙐𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙖𝙮!

Although our main gallery is closed over the summer, we still have amazing artwork on view outside!

Greg Staats' Installation, 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 was created in partnership with the University of Waterloo Art Gallery and Longhouse Labs, which is located on the East Campus Hall windows facing Phillip Street. Wampum is the medium of truth and intention by recording the heart and good mind of the Hodinöhsö:ni’. Within the Hodinöhsö:ni’ Condolence Ceremony to recognize and resolve grief, the transformative orality of At the Edge of the Woods is 4 reciprocal speeches followed by an action of exchange of codified white wampum strands embodying life and light, elevate and restore the good mind. This work is situated in liminal space, where trauma can be transformed collectively into renewal and while on the pathway to the longhouse a continuum of the intention of peace and where the community is held by the words of the condolence and restoration of the good mind is embraced and shared. When the body/memory is integrated into a site prescribed for creativity and transformation and when the language of ceremony includes the earth on which upon is walked - that is Landbase.

Greg Staats is Skarù:reˀ (Tuscarora) / Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) b. 1963, Ohsweken, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. He is a Toronto-based artist whose ongoing Hodinöhsö:ni’ restorative aesthetic accumulates knowledge from the worldview found within language and defines the plurality of relationships with trauma and renewal. His lens-based language documents cycles of return towards a complete Onkwehón:we neha (our original ways). Staats articulates his on-reserve lived experience positionality in visual forms including: text works, photography, embodied wampum sculpture, performance, installation, and video. Greg has shown his work both nationally and internationally and is a Fellow at the University of Waterloo Longhouse Labs.

You can still view Natalie Hunter's () work, 𝘊𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 in the window space above the East Campus Hall (ECH) entrance to UWAG, and as a new installation located in the window space at the front of ECH, you can now view Greg Stat's () work, 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 over the summer months.

Elise Popa's exhibition 𝘼 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙔𝙚𝙖𝙧, tells the story of Popa’s own fallow season, encapsulated through an intuitive skating practice and the building of an ice rink on a farm just outside Stratford, Ontario. The documentation that follows the process of making the rink explores how the physical labour and repetitive maintenance tasks mirror the efforts needed to support the artist’s recovery and self-determination post heartbreak.

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝗮 is an interdisciplinary artist and long-time figure skater from southern Ontario. She graduated from Brock University’s Bachelor of Arts Studio Art program in 2022, where she began exploring kinetic art practices. As a Master of Fine Arts candidate at University of Waterloo, Popa has developed her intuitive movement practice while embracing failure as a methodology: creating work that articulates movement on skates (inline or figure) as a form of becoming.

James Malzahn's exhibition, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝘅, examines how powerful systems enter everyday life by appearing useful, convenient, entertaining, and reassuring. Presented as a modern domestic device for safety and public information, it carries the appeal of something new: a media object families could watch, gather around, and feel proud to own. While rooted in a mid-century setting, the exhibition speaks to contemporary concerns around artificial intelligence, networked surveillance, and persuasive media: tools with the potential to benefit society, but also to manipulate, misinform, observe, and control when placed in the wrong hands.

𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘇𝗮𝗵𝗻 is an interdisciplinary artist and MFA candidate at the University of Waterloo whose background in technology shapes a practice rooted in the belief that technological systems should benefit humanity. Working across traditional and digital media, installation, custom-built electronics, and code, he creates immersive environments that generate critical conversation about the real and potential misuses of technology and the ways these systems can harm society, perception, and public trust.
