Two topics that continually capture the focus of Alberto are the intricate balance and relationship between chaos and order; while the other is the silent collaboration between the conscious and unconscious areas of the mind.

This piece, from his Innovative Expressionism collection, exemplifies both of these topics. What appears to be a chaotic composition at first slowly reveals itself as an orchestra of the pieces; whilst the bits of human form seem to suggest we have many eyes observing this chaotic orchestra.

All of this, and we haven't even discussed colour usage.

What are your thoughts on this piece? How does the team in your head interpret the scene?

As a student of phsyics and chemistry in the late 1930s and 40s, Volker was forced by his father to put his art studies to the side.

Challenged by Picasso and inspired by Klimt, Volker developed his own unique style. Respecting the masters, he added in the logic, science and rational that were engrained in his processing. The result is a collection of 'Innovative Expressionism', as his works have been dubbed by colleagues in both the academic and art worlds.

Between the period of 1960-1970 Volker would take this style on his travels, featuring in exhibitions across 32 different countries.

Conflict.

A main theme throughout Volker's work. Often in conflict (on an individual scale or on a global scale) there are differing forces driving either side. Emotion. Economics. Creative difference.

Yet, both sides have much in common. Logic, passion, an innate desire for peace. Most importantly both sides have the ability to reason. The power of the human mind at their disposal. It is with this in mind that Volker urges us, as a species, to use this power for the discovery of conflict resolution that does not require the most basic answer...violence.

Instigating a response in the viewer is one the 3 main characteristics of 'purposeful art' says Volker.

Through the use of colour combinations, symbolism and structure, the aim is to instigate an emotional/energetic response within the viewer to stimulate inner thought and exploration.

Message from Volker: Losing touch with ourselves leads us to also lose touch with the reality of of our impact on the world around us. With the loss of true self knowledge, we have put too much responsibility on the limited experience of the ego.

The concept of chaos and catastrophe weighed heavily on Volker. Having witnessed the great wars of the 20th century, the idea of humanity being unable to overcome chaos was always a haunting thought. "With the power of the human mind, we have endless solutions within our grasp."

The capacity to reason is one of our strengths as a species. How we end up fighting wars and resorting to violence to face conflict is a shame, and a let down to how far we have come and can go.

The Bayer-Hochhaus building. When it was built in 1963 it was the tallest building in Germany with 32 floors and a height of 122m/400ft.

This was one of many projects that E.A Volker contributed to with his engineering expertise. One of his proudest projects, the German born engineer often looks back in wonder that he had the opportunity to contribute to such an architectural and engineering feat.
