Mendeleev Monday - Atomic Number 26 - Iron (Fe). Iron's element symbol
(Fe) comes from the Latin word for iron, "ferrum." Iron is the second most abundant metal on Earth and forms about 80% of the planet's inner and outer cores. 98% of iron ore is used to make steel. Pure iron and iron alloys are used to make permanent magnets found in electric motors, generators, loudspeakers and electrical transformers. As cast iron it is common in cookware, pipes, and engine parts.

Mendeleev Monday - Atomic Number 25 - Manganese (Mn). Manganese is the fifth most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It is a biological necessity because plants use Manganese as a catalyst during photosynthesis to eventually generate oxygen and it plays roles for the human metabolism, bone formation, and antioxidant defense. About 90% of all mined Manganese is used to make steel. It is also used in fertilizers, during water treatment, paints, and both alkaline and lithium-ion batteries.

Mendeleev Monday -Atomic Number 24 - Chromium (Cr). Chromium is the world's hardest metal despite its brittleness. It gets its lustrous appearance because it reflects nearly 70% of visible light and 90% of infrared light. Chromium is used in the production of stainless steel due to its natural anti-rust capabilities. It is also used in chrome plating, leather tanning, wood treatment, paints and dyes.

The autumn equinox is upon us once again! Earth has reached the point in its orbit where the Sun is directly above the Equator. Consequently, the amounts of daylight and darkness are nearly equal across the globe for the day, in turn, marking the official start of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere while Spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Our magnifiers are efficient tools for students and professionals alike, to help track and observe nature as the seasons change.

Mendeleev Monday - Atomic Number 23 - Vanadium (V). Vanadium was discovered twice, first in 1801 by Spanish mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río, however a shipwreck led to his discovery ultimately not being proven nor credited. Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström later rediscovered it in 1830 and named it after Vanadis (Freya), the Old Norse goddess of beauty and fertility. Vanadium is used to make shock resistant steel alloys, industrial tools, and found in large-scale batteries that store renewable energy for electrical grids.

It's Cheeseburger Day! While today is a day worth enjoying a cheeseburger and taking a moment to appreciate the art of culinary creativity, food safety should never be neglected. Cleaning and sanitizing with Chlorine or QUAT solutions are inexpensive methods that are quick to verify dilutions and help to pass inspections by Health Departments.

Mendeleev Monday -Atomic Number 22 - Titanium (Ti). Titanium is named after the Titans of Greek mythology because of its strength. It is the 9th most abundant element in the Earth's crust, but because it reacts instantly with oxygen to create a highly corrosion resistant protective film, it is expensive and difficult to isolate. Titanium does not cause toxic reactions to the human body, so it is commonly bonded directly with bone for medical and dental implants, and used in sporting gear, sunscreens, paints, pipes, toothpaste and vehicles.
