Three new species are described from a temporary reservoir located in the upper drainage of the rio Paracatu, a tributary of the rio Sรฃo Francisco basin, in the Minas Gerais State, Brazil. A high concentration of endemic species of annual fishes belonging to the ๐ป๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ species group has been recorded in a small area encompassing the plateaus associated with the upper drainage of the rio Paracatu. These species can be distinguished from other ๐ป๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ species, except those belonging to the ๐ป. ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ complex, by the presence of a dark metallic ochre-yellow coloration on the anterior portion of the male flanks; absence of humeral marks, black blotches on the anterior portion of the male flanks; and light-red pectoral fins in males. Examination of ๐ป. ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ group specimens from the upper rio Paracatu revealed three new species that can be separated from their congeners based on the flank color pattern in males and differences in morphometric traits. Here, we describe three new species of the ๐ป. ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ species group and report the ongoing decline of habitat in their areas of occurrence in the northwestern region of Minas Gerais State.
All three species were assessed as Critically Endangered (CR). A key to identification of the species of ๐ป๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ species group is provided.
