ART 101 | Why Do Artists Paint on Different Surfaces?

When looking at a gallery label, it’s easy to focus on the medium—oil, acrylic, mixed media—and overlook the words that come after it: On canvas. On wood panel. On birch panel.

But the surface an artist chooses can play an important role in how a painting is created.

🖌️ Canvas has a woven texture and a slight amount of flexibility beneath the brush. It’s lightweight for its size, making it a popular choice for larger works, and that subtle texture can sometimes remain visible beneath the finished painting.

🌳 Wood panel gives artists a firm, rigid surface with no bounce beneath the brush. Depending on how it’s prepared, it can be wonderfully smooth for fine details and controlled marks—or provide a sturdy foundation for bold, textured techniques.

🌿 Birch panel is a type of wood panel known for its fine, even surface. Some artists appreciate it for detailed work, while others use it for expressive brushwork, layering, and texture.

So which one is best? There really isn’t a single answer. An artist may choose a surface based on texture, rigidity, size, weight, technique, appearance—or simply because they enjoy the way it feels to paint on.

The next time you’re admiring a painting, take a moment to look beyond what’s on the surface. Sometimes, what’s underneath the paint is part of the story too!

ART TERMS EXPLAINED | Study, Daywrite & Master

What does it mean when an artwork is called a study? And does that mean it isn't a finished painting?

Not necessarily!

Artists often create works for different purposes throughout their creative process, and the terminology they use can offer a glimpse into how they explore an idea.

A study is often an exploration of a subject, composition, colour palette, light, or technique. It may help an artist develop an idea for another work—but a study can also stand entirely on its own as a completed original artwork.

Saskatchewan artist Cheryl Tuck-Tallon takes this idea even further within her own practice, using terms such as Study, Daywrite, and Master to distinguish works within her body of work. These titles offer another layer to the paintings, reflecting different stages, approaches, or ways of engaging with a subject.

And that's an important distinction: a study isn't simply an “unfinished version” of a finished painting. Smaller works, exploratory pieces, and studies can be complete artworks in their own right.

Sometimes, the title of a painting tells us more than what we're looking at—it gives us a little window into how the artist works.

Next time you see Study, Daywrite, or Master written beside one of Cheryl's paintings, take a closer look. What similarities—or differences—can you spot?

Curated Pick of the Week | Walk On By

There’s somewhere to be—and this bear is getting there.

This week’s Curated Pick of the Week is "Walk On By" by Susie Cipolla. With its warm, earthy palette and confident brushwork, the painting captures a black bear mid-stride, giving an otherwise quiet composition a wonderful sense of movement and character.

The turned head, lifted paw, and almost casual stride make the moment feel wonderfully candid—as though we’ve simply crossed paths with the bear while it continues on its way.

A Very Canadian Lazy Day 🐻

It’s National Lazy Day, and it seems only fitting to celebrate with a few Canadian experts in the field.

When you spend your days wandering the forest, climbing trees, and generally being a bear, sometimes the only reasonable thing to do is find a comfortable branch and do… absolutely nothing. 🐻💤

Canadian wildlife has long inspired artists with its beauty, strength, and character—but today, we’re appreciating a slightly different side: the art of taking it easy.

So consider this your Monday reminder from the bears: find a comfortable spot, slow down for a moment, and enjoy a little bit of Canada at its most relaxed. 🍁

Whether it's the gentle blossoms surrounding "Spring Shack," the charming community in "The Caregiver," the peaceful solitude of "Summer Breeze," or the watchful presence of "The Watcher," Crystal's work encourages us to see the extraordinary hidden within the everyday.

Visit Black Spruce Gallery to explore Crystal Rassi's collection and discover the stories waiting in each painting.

Curated Pick of the Week

There’s a split second in nature that often goes unnoticed—the moment just before the catch.

This week's Curated Pick captures that instant beautifully. With wings fully extended and talons reaching forward, "Hunting" by Connie Geerts conveys both power and precision. The striking turquoise background contrasts with the soft greys and whites of the owl, creating a sense of motion that draws the eye and invites you to pause.

Whether you're captivated by birds of prey, expressive brushwork, or the beauty of wildlife in motion, this piece is one that rewards a closer look.
