✨ Artist Spotlight ✨ The Grinch Christmas Door
At Woodcarving Illustrated, we love highlighting talented artists—and today we’re excited to do just that!
Created by @‌DaveKergan 👏 in collaboration with @‌westwindswoodsculptingstudio, this whimsical piece was expertly carved from Chipping Away Inc. basswood and brought to life with acrylic paints.
Bravo to another incredible carving that captures both skill and storytelling! 🪵

Here is a special "First Family" being offered. I have posted this set before, but I have some better pics of it now. This could be the perfect Christmas gift youve been searching for.

Mary is approximately 10 1/4" tall and her colours were picked accordingly:
Blue: signifying divinity, heaven, purity and royalty.
Red: Humanity, passion and earth.
White: Purity and holiness.

Joseph is 11 1/2" tall and colored in brown and green. Simple colours of the Earth, signifying the simple life of a carpenter.

Baby Jesus is wrapped in an off white color. His face and the crib are natural Basswood with Linseed Oil.

All are hand carved from 2" by 2" Basswood stock.

Much thought and creative passion went into this family. My desire was to make something larger yet able to blend into any home and be able to be kept out and treasured all year long.

I usually do a large carving for Christmas, this year I wasn't able to. I have a pretty bad abdominal hernia. Quite uncomfortable so extra hours at the studio bench aren't as relaxing as they used to be. But the creative drive is still strong and overriding. So this year's is a bit of a smaller carving, but still festive and fun🎄.

Presenting the Grinch door. Complete with a warning sign and directions to Mount Crumpit amd which way to Whoville .

All done with basswood from Chipping Away Inc and painted in acrylics.

Last work on the Grinch Door/scene for tonight. The footprints are in, hard to see though. The signs for Mt. Crumpets amd Whoville are done and a "Beware" sign for the Grinch.

Tomorrow........the painting begins!🎄

Spent some time with a few chisels and then a sanding drum in a flex shaft. The Grinch door needed a bit of a base. This one is shaped to look like wind blown snow.

Next is doorknob, and some warning signs.
Overall I'm pretty happy at how this is shaping up.

There's a Grinch animated movie from 2018 that really grabbed me. I do prefer the original animated one but this one is a good second. Lots of textures and shapes the really grab a person's attention.
Something from the movie really caught my attention......his door.

The Grinch's door to be precise.

Taking some pics of the movie I've been carving away freehand on a Grinch Door. Ive gotten most of it done, door, surroundings, window and frame and a kick plate to go on after. I need to do the doorknob and a base with a few "Grinchy" signs on it.

The quilted Santa is fully painted!
I wanted to go with some Santa themes for the quilt so there are Trees, Sleigh Bells, Holly and leaves and Snowflakes adorning the squares.
A grey fur trim and deep red hat round out his attire. Leather mitts and rosy cheeks and nose too.

Playing around with Angel Nunez Santa stencil, as snow falls gently outside. Decided to see what I could do if I let my imagination direct my hands. Well......theres texture on the collar, sleeves and hat ball.

And then there is the coat.

I thought what would it look like if Mrs Clause made him a quilted coat......

I need to give him a coat of BLO and then figure out what the coat pattern will look like. Will it be squares of solid colors or will there be a pattern?

This is the large stencil and fully carved in the round.

The new Family is finished. After a coating of Boiled Linseed Oil fully dried the figures were colored using very thinned acrylics.

Ive been a bit busy lately. I've been carving a special family, who incidentally the little one has a birthday coming up in less than 2 months.

I have done nativity sets before, but this one is a different style and I took a real liking to it.

All carved from 2" basswood, Joseph alone measures 11 1/2" tall. Some woodburning to add separation as well.

Next step is to give them a good coat of Boiled Linseed Oil amd then some watered down acrylics to add some color to our family.

A new couple on the bench this week. Joseph and beside him is Mary, under construction at the moment.

Joseph measures 11 1/2" tall and both will be a diameter of 2".
