BREAKING NEWS: Young Voices Help Shape the Future of Destination Wasaga - Created from ideas shared by more than 200 local students, a new 40-foot mural captures young people’s hopes for the future of Wasaga Beach

More than 200 local students have helped turn their ideas for the future of Wasaga Beach into a permanent 40-foot mural unveiled today at Wasaga Stars Arena.

Local students joined members of Council to unveil the Destination Wasaga Imagine Mural, a permanent piece of public art inspired by ideas they shared during the Town’s extensive Destination Wasaga Master Plan public engagement process.

“This mural is a powerful reminder that Destination Wasaga is not just about the next few years — it is about the next generation,” said Mayor Brian Smith. The students who helped create this brought creativity, optimism, and big ideas to the table. They reminded us that great communities are built not only through plans and infrastructure, but by listening to the people who will inherit the future we are shaping today.”

The Destination Wasaga Imagine Mural was created from youth engagement workshops held in March of this year, giving local Grade 6 and 7 students a direct voice in the once-in-a-generation vision for the community. The mural captures the creativity, imagination, and hopes of students from St. Noel Chabanel Catholic Elementary School, Worsley Elementary School, Birchview Dunes Elementary School, and Wasaga Beach Public School.

Students were invited to participate in a community visioning exercise and respond to a simple but powerful prompt: “Imagine what Wasaga Beach could be.” As students shared ideas for the future of Wasaga Beach, an artist transformed them into drawings, themes, and concepts that formed the foundation of the mural.

Another great example of thoughtful transportation planning taking shape in Wasaga Beach.

Progress continues on the new roundabout connecting Main Street, Mosley Street, and Spruce Street — a project designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and access in one of the community’s busiest areas.

One of the biggest benefits? During peak tourism season, drivers turning left from Spruce Street onto Main Street will no longer face long waits and frustrating backups when traffic volumes are high. The roundabout will keep vehicles moving more efficiently while improving connectivity to Wasaga’s historic downtown.

Investments like this help support residents, businesses, and visitors by creating a road network that works better today and is prepared for future growth.

BREAKING NEWS: Construction Begins on Wasaga Beach's First High School and Community Hub - Council-led partnership with Simcoe Muskoka District School Board and Far Sight Homes turns long-standing need into shovels in the ground for Wasaga Beach families

Construction is officially underway on Wasaga Beach’s first high school and community hub, bringing local students one step closer to attending high school in their own community.

Representatives from the Town of Wasaga Beach, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, Province of Ontario, and community partners gathered today to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new campus at 486 River Road West.

“Today is about action, partnership, and results for Wasaga Beach families,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “Council knew our kids deserved access to high school here at home, and we took a different approach to help make that happen. By working directly with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and the Province of Ontario, we helped advance a smarter, more practical proposal that gets shovels in the ground and doors open sooner. This project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when municipal, provincial, education, and private-sector partners work together to put students and families first.”

The project reflects a proactive, made-in-Wasaga Beach approach led by Town Council in partnership with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. Rather than waiting for a traditional school project to move forward on its own, the Town and school board advanced a practical proposal that uses existing municipal infrastructure beside the Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Public Library.

That approach helped secure provincial funding for the Town’s first high school faster. For local students and families, this project means less time travelling out of town by bus, more time in the classroom, and more opportunities to take part in sports, arts, clubs, and extracurricular activities in their own community. The new campus will give local students the chance to learn, compete, and build school life in their own community.

Highlights of the project include:
✅K-12 school with 1008 student spaces
✅49 licensed childcare spaces
✅300-seat community theatre
✅Track-and-field facilities
✅Shared learning spaces, and opportunities for post-secondary and continuing education through partnerships with Canadore College and Lakehead University

The project is supported by a total investment of $70.1 million, including $67.3 million in provincial funding and a $2.8 million contribution from the Town of Wasaga Beach for theatre enhancements that will expand opportunities for students and residents. The School and Community Hub was also made possible through a significant land donation from Far Sight Homes.

BREAKING NEWS: Advocacy Delivers: Wasaga Beach Welcomes Major Investment in 288-Bed Long-Term Care Home, Largest in South Georgian Bay - Council-led effort helps bring first long-term care home to the community

The Town of Wasaga Beach is celebrating a major investment and healthcare milestone following the Province of Ontario's announcement that it will add 288 long-term care beds through a new peopleCare Communities project in Wasaga Beach.

"This is a tremendous victory for our community and a landmark investment in healthcare for South Georgian Bay," said Mayor Brian Smith. "When Council identified long-term care as a priority, we took a proactive approach. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to us, we went out and pursued them. Staff worked closely with peopleCare to identify potential locations, support project planning, and bring a shovel-ready proposal directly to Queen's Park. Today, that work has resulted in Wasaga Beach securing its first long-term care home — and the largest long-term care home in the region."

Today's announcement will deliver:
✅ $100 million investment in long-term care and healthcare infrastructure
✅ 288 new long-term care beds in Wasaga Beach's first-ever long-term care home
✅ Largest long-term care home in the South Georgian Bay region
✅ Approximately 350 new healthcare and support-sector jobs
