Since 2002 Theatre Wakefield has developed arts and culture in the Lower Gatineau Valley. Focusing on community theatre and film, we produce main-stage performances, dramatic readings, heritage animation projects, Wakefield Doc Fest, Ta Da! Festival, various hosted productions and a variety of training workshops. Our organization plays a key role in Wakefield’s lively culture of volunteerism, with

a pool of volunteers and members who are the heart of Theatre Wakefield. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of operations and activities, from board management to Theatre Wakefield productions. We are such a thriving community organization and it is all because of these enormous contributions of presence, labour and creativity year after year.

The Curious Case of the Cottingley Fairies
and would like to learn to be an actor in TW’s next play?

(Our lead actors in Fairies were 8 and 10, one of whom has been honing her skills for several summers in TW camps!)

It’s not too late! We still have space in our week-long camp starting Monday:

August 10-14, 2026

9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Age: 8-13

Workshop Leader: Jesse Kahat

Cost: $295.

Let your child’s creativity take root in a week-long theatre adventure set deep within an Enchanted Forest. Campers become storytellers, actors, and world‑builders as they dream up magical creatures, mysterious landscapes, and the legends that bring their forest to life. Through acting games, movement, collaborative writing, and hands‑on design, they work together to create an original play inspired by their own imaginations.

The language of instruction is English, but the instructor can clarify points in French for francophone children who may not be fully bilingual

CURIOUS CASE OF THE COTTINGLEY FAIRIES Garners Standing Ovations!

Location: Fairbairn House Heritage Centre

Between 1917 and 1920, while the world was immersed in the first “Great War”, two young girls in Yorkshire England were playing in a brook and photographed what they purported to be fairies dancing. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of the Sherlock Holmes books) and spiritual leaders of the day championed the legitimacy of the photographs. They were reproduced in publications around the world, feeding a world starved for hope.

The play explores what some say was the biggest hoax of the 20th century. Was it the first example of a “deep fake” that went viral, predating the Internet by 70 years? The play explores childhood, loss, and asks, “What is ‘real’?”. Did any deception actually take place, or did audiences 100 years ago see what they wanted to see, just as we do now?

Planning Your Visit?
Doors open an hour before the performance to enable children and families to create their own fairies and fairy photographs. Prizes will be offered for the most realistic and creative images. Submissions will be shown on Theatre Wakefield’s web site. There will be a Q&A after Sunday matinées.

There will be no intermission.

Seating is on the grass in front of the stage. Make sure to bring hats, sunblock, insect repellent, drinks, and a chair or mat to sit on if you wish. Parasols, umbrellas and small sun tents are allowed if they don’t block the view of other patrons.

In the case of rain, patrons can choose to attend any subsequent performance, including a rain date at the end of the run on Sunday, July 26th.

Theatre Wakefield is clearing the Gibson family’s barn, where we have stored furniture and sets for many years.

This e-mail is both an offer of “free stuff” and a request for help from all our members who have benefitted from our productions and performance opportunities over the years.

FREE STUFF:

5-6 doors and doorframes

5 matching kitchen cupboard and counter units

a Queen bed

4 wooden single bedframes

4 single box spring and spring mattresses

a futon mattress

3 spring mattresses

an oversized trunk (think “Mr. Dressup”)

2 pic-nic tables

a pair of louvred closet doors

~ 20 flats, most 4 ft x 8 ft. with 1x3 or 1x4 framing covered by 1/4 inch plywood

set of stairs

a side table

HELP NEEDED on SAT. from 12-2 p.m.

1) to carry items from the barn at 515 Riverside Dr. to the curb (max items allowed in the La Peche “bulky item” pickup next week is 10)

2) a couple of pickup trucks or trailers are needed to move remaining items in excess of 10 to additional addresses for pickup. The Gibsons also have a trailer if your car has a ball hitch
