Details of a new 18" x 24" drawing (ink on paper) called "Summer (in the Garden)". Curious? You can see how it all fits together by visiting Heritage Place in Kelvington, SK from July 30 - August 3 (10 AM - 5 PM). Lately I've been drawing for my Applied Botany course -- it's so much fun!!

"Drawing is a powerful tool for both our insight and our imagination... Drawing enables us to express our attitudes and emotions freely, and above all, to look at and learn to see the world that surrounds us... There is something in the the physical act of drawing, the coordination of hand and eye, and the translation of sensory experience into marks and lines that reveals a new way of seeing. There is a significant difference between looking and seeing. Artists know this, but it is something we can all experience if we draw." Sarah Simblet, Botany for the Artist: an Inspirational Guide to Drawing Plants, 2010

The garden is under a layer of fresh snow, and it's time to cozy up indoors. My birdwatching photos provide an endless supply of creative inspiration. Here, an American Tree Sparrow photographed at Foam Lake Marsh, SK, drawn in chalk pastel and charcoal.

One of my students, wise far beyond his years, once told me, "I want to be an artist, and artists have to practise." Practise, practise, practise. It doesn't matter what I'm drawing, I feel happy whenever I draw. (charcoal on paper)

I love all kinds of art, including functional art. Here is a look at my first mosaic experiment. Smashing up the tile was great fun! I learned lots by doing this project and I am pleased with how it is withstanding the outdoor environment. (The patio set is one I bought used over a decade ago and gave new life with a couple of coats of yellow paint.) I am dreaming of making a mosaic table, and then maybe a mosaic wall. Dream big!! I visit the restore every chance I get in search of colourful tiles to someday make those dreams a reality.
