How to visit your artist friend who lives on a tiny remote island in the Pacific Northwest:

Step 1:
Pick a year when she is actually home, unlike the past 5 years when she's been away when you have sailed nearby

Step 2:
Sail 161.1 NM to Savary Island, taking 16 days to do so because you stop along the way and explore.

Step 3:
Figure out where to anchor in shifty wind conditions in a non-traditional anchorage where all the guide books tell you it's not a great idea

Step 4:
Time it with the weather so it's not a disaster

Step 5:
Wake up, inflate kayak, haul out stove and water jug and kettle, make tea, pack day bag (multiple steps combined into one for reader convenience)

Step 6:
Figure out which point of land to aim for, that the person on land and the person in kayak can both reach

Step 7:
Paddle approximately 2km

Step 8:
Find artist friend on shore. Cue "At Last!"

Step 9: Enjoy and savour and laugh and talk and hug

Step 10:
Paddle and sail away before the wind turns. Hold the joy in your heart.

My own art on a phone case?!? And it's tough, compostable and made in Canada? Soooo jazzed that allows custom designs now! This arrived just in time for the Fernwood Art Stroll, where we had an abundance of sunshine and a great turnout.

Would you get something like this on a phone case?

The original feather drawing is chalk pastel and measures 18"×30" and is part of a series called Hope Is The Thing With Feathers.

Well THAT went by quickly! A beautiful day at the together with at venue 6. We will be in the back garden tomorrow also - Sunday May 31 from 11am-4pm so come on by.

Thanks to .mancuso for helping with setup, for making all sorts of signs for my table, and for loaning display materials. And all the other champions along the way. It really does take a village!

It's World Migratory Bird Day today, so I'll be heading out with my binoculars. This new series of mine, Hope is the Thing With Feathers, celebrates the power of a feather to provide warmth, flight, communication, and joy. Chalk pastel.

Bird watching is a mix of wonder and delight... and sadness as we continue to witness massive species decline. Fortunately there are sooooo many ways to support birds, and this year I've been listening in to the sessions at Less Lawn More Life to learn more. I don't have a yard, only a balcony, so for years I didn't think they're was much I could do, but now I'm starting to plant native species that do well in containers that are pollinator and bird friendly.

Oh, SNAP!
The last couple weeks have NOT gone according to plan... breaking my dominant (right) arm was definitely not on the agenda.
It's been a humbling experience, having to rely on others for almost everything (especially in the first week, but ongoingly for many things still). I have to sleep sitting up, propped up on the couch with many pillows and one of those neck pillows for travel. So thankful for all the Love Army folks who have shown up to support the healing process 💙

In the moments of lucidity between doses of painkillers and dozing and the slow pace of basic life tasks, I've taken up The Lefty Sessions: small drawings and writing with my left/ non-dominant hand. It started 3 days after getting out of hospital and most days I'm able to find a small pocket of energy to draw. These are small, straight to pen bird drawings.

So while my art residency with # didn't go exactly as expected, I've channeled that energy in a new direction as the healing continues. Today is exactly 2 weeks since my broken wing, and I'm delighted with the progression.

More is more right? These tiny pieces, shown on a dinner plate, are part of the work I've been doing during the this September. This colour combo is named Ignite:

IGNITE is bold, energetic, and sassy, and refuses to apologize for her presence. She’s the first on the dancefloor, the voice heard all across the room, and the fire starter who gets s**t done! Some say she’s “too much” and don’t know how to handle her energy… look closer, though, and you’ll find she’s loyal, passionate, and a fierce champion for love and integrity.

What is it that delights us so much about tiny things? I'm currently using my time with the to create miniature works for an upcoming show. It's challenging to translate my concepts to an even smaller format, so it took a little while to get in the groove. Wrat do you think?
