Vinyl. Ultraleather. Projector slides from the ’60s. Welcome to the mind of Stephanie Mould, a 22-year-old designer from Duncan, BC, whose brand Smouldy is serving up sustainability with serious attitude!

A graduate of Pacific Design Academy, Stephanie work somehow channels the essence of past decades, music, movement, and silhouettes from the 60s through the 80s, and reinvents them for a generation who missed them the first time around. Her work is nostalgic, but never outdated. Retro, but never costume. Just bold, clean-lined, and unapologetically modern.

Every piece in her runway collection was made from deadstock vinyl, marine upholstery scraps, or repurposed faux leather, especially Ultraleather; a sleek material usually found in boats and hot rods. She turns it into structured, gender-inclusive garments that look as sharp on the street as they do on the runway.

And then there’s that gown! Made entirely of vintage projector slides from the ’60s and ’70s, all connected with tiny metal jump rings. It shimmered like memory. It rattled when it walked. It was art. It was everything.

Stephanie isn’t just designing clothes she’s building a rebellion. Against waste. Against fast fashion. Who says sustainable can’t be sexy?

Designer Dianne Gibson has a gift: turning the overlooked into something unforgettable. Based in the heart of Canada’s wine country, Dianne draws inspiration from the excess generated by the wine industry in the Okanagan, transforming discarded packaging materials, recycled plastics, and fabric off-cuts into dramatic gowns, bold corsets, and casual, breathable resort wear that speaks to both beauty and environmental urgency.

Her recent collection, featured at Future Oceans International during Beakerhead 2025, fuses eco-activism with personal storytelling. Everyday pieces are crafted from sustainable bamboo and Modal off-cuts, offering soft, wearable alternatives to fast fashion. Meanwhile, her bespoke corsets and skirts are printed on reclaimed sailcloth and inspired by real tattoos for a style of couture that’s personal and enduring.

Adding power and charisma to the runway is her model and muse, Drag Star Diva Dave. Together, they love to challenge the status quo and reimagine what sustainability looks like in an industry often defined by excess.

“This collection is a call to rethink our consumption and our waste, and a reminder that with time, intention and creativity value can be created,” Dianne says. Her work is proof that materials once destined for landfill can be reborn as runway art, turning waste into wonder, and fashion into a force for change.

This Earth Day, we’re celebrating the incredible voices working for our planet and oceans. Meet Dani Nowosad, a Red River Métis-settler, Postdoctoral Fellow in Integrative Biology, and artist whose work bridges science, culture, and climate action.

Dani’s research in Arctic freshwater ecosystems helps monitor biodiversity and protect fragile environments in partnership with Inuit communities. Through her beadwork and linocut prints, she brings environmental awareness to life in a tangible and powerful way.

“Both my science and art practices focus heavily on climate and environmental awareness.”

Her story reminds us that action can be both bold and beautiful, and that each of us has a role to play.

This look by Samantha Faye is a masterclass in contrast, delicate and daring, structured and soft. A sheer black lace bodice plays against a deep burgundy skirt, creating a silhouette that’s confident, unapologetic, and intentional.

The design feels effortless, but every detail is intentional. From the asymmetry of the fabric panels to the strong boots grounding the look, it’s a story of confidence, creativity, and conscious design.

Bold, feminine, and consciously made — this stunning look by Samantha Faye blends sheer lace with rich burgundy panels for a silhouette that’s both edgy and elegant. Designed using reclaimed textiles and low-waste techniques, it’s proof that sustainability and style go hand in hand.

Ava, stylists brought it to life on the runway with two distinct vibes: hair up for fierce confidence, and hair down for effortless glam.

We love them both, which look speaks to you more: hair up or hair down? Let us know in the comments!

Calling all ocean photographers! The 12th Annual UN World Oceans Day Photo Competition is still open for submissions! This year’s theme is “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” inviting powerful images that capture the awe and inspiration of our ocean world.

“Wonder is the foundation of scientific knowledge, the allure behind exploration, the curiosity that drives innovation, and the seed of traditional wisdom. In the face of increasingly daunting challenges, the act of wondering serves to remind us that we are part of something bigger. It wakes us up to our inherent connection to the earth and to each other, expands our understanding of what is possible, empowers innovation and prioritizes decision-making for collective well-being. This World Oceans Day, we celebrate the ocean’s essential wonder from all of the wonders it consists of to the wonder it ignites, and call on decision-makers to not lose sight the ocean’s wonder when determining its fate.” - UN WOD
