Vinyl. Ultraleather. Projector slides from the ’60s. Welcome to the mind of Stephanie Mould, a 22-year-old designer from Duncan, BC, whose brand Smouldy is serving up sustainability with serious attitude!
A graduate of Pacific Design Academy, Stephanie work somehow channels the essence of past decades, music, movement, and silhouettes from the 60s through the 80s, and reinvents them for a generation who missed them the first time around. Her work is nostalgic, but never outdated. Retro, but never costume. Just bold, clean-lined, and unapologetically modern.
Every piece in her runway collection was made from deadstock vinyl, marine upholstery scraps, or repurposed faux leather, especially Ultraleather; a sleek material usually found in boats and hot rods. She turns it into structured, gender-inclusive garments that look as sharp on the street as they do on the runway.
And then there’s that gown! Made entirely of vintage projector slides from the ’60s and ’70s, all connected with tiny metal jump rings. It shimmered like memory. It rattled when it walked. It was art. It was everything.
Stephanie isn’t just designing clothes she’s building a rebellion. Against waste. Against fast fashion. Who says sustainable can’t be sexy?
