SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles

SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles Renegade theatre, puppet theatre, and prison theatre
Led by Kathleen Greenfield & Ingrid Hansen SNAFU’s events are accessible and affordable. And we smell nice.

Westcoast company SNAFU creates unexpected spectacles for audiences who don’t normally go see live theatre. VISION:
To create challenging, meaningful, freakish and free artistic spaces that shed light, share space, celebrate all bodies, and cultivate delight. CORE VALUES:
- embodied creation through action & active experimentation
- unprecedented and un-precious approach to creation: rough and re

ady, ramshackle, raw
- weaving stories, weaving mediums, and people
- embrace the forgotten/invisible communities
- giving the audience an active role in the action as it unfolds

SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles creates innovative puppetry, renegade outdoor theatre, physical theatre and prison theatre. The company has been an innovator in Victoria’s theatre community since its inception in 2006. Co-Artistic Directors Ingrid Hansen and Kathleen Greenfield are passionate about creating projects with and for people who do not normally attend theatre. Together with the incarcerated artists of William Head on Stage, SNAFU has premiered 9 prison theatre productions amplifying the voices of incarcerated people for thousands of public audience members. Outside of prison, SNAFU has created 12 original full-length shows, 7 site-specific shorts, 21 tours, 3 sign-language performances, and won over 20 awards, including Victoria’s Critic’s Choice and the Playwright Theatre Centre’s New Play Prize. SNAFU’s projects have been supported by Canada Council, the CRD, and the BC Arts Council. Much of our work is for an all-ages audience, creating dynamic spaces for young and old to experience art together under new terms. We create in unusual spaces, including bike trails, washrooms, theatres, galleries, fields, heritage sites, parking lots, schools and prisons. We work in a collaborative and non-hierarchical creative process. Our collaborations connect multidisciplinary artists in storytelling, puppetry, dance, drag, live music, and visual art. Most of the time. Sign up for our email list, we send out invites a couple times a year, whenever we have an event in yer city.

This month at Montreal Fringe… Meet the Middle Child. The peacemaker. Squished between. And the siblings who refuse to let the story be told alone.

3 bouffon clowns crawl from the wreckage of childhood to reenact, distort, and delight in the chaos that made them.

Sharp, silly, and strangely heartfelt… you’ll laugh, squirm, and recognize the monsters in your own family.

SNAFU en tournee!

FRANCE
SWITZERLAND
BELGIUM

Avec spectacles EPIDERMIS CIRCUS
Et THE BABY TYLER SHOW

Our family show Baby Tyler has still a few tickets but not many
