It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Dan Costain — beloved performer, craftsman, collaborator, and cherished member of the Kaleidoscope family.

Dan helped shape Kaleidoscope in our early years, performing in countless productions including The AlliHippoRhinoCrocoDilligator, Rutabaga Country, The Musicians of Bremen, our international touring production of The Ant and the Grasshopper and many, many more! Over the years he also built sets for many Kaleidoscope productions — including pieces still on stage in our recent production of Thumbelina.

In an article preserved in the Kaleidoscope archives, Dan once reflected:
“Even the bad times have made me learn things I can put to good use.”

From Kaleidoscope’s Artistic & Executive Director Pat Rundell:

“Danny was truly one of a kind. I first saw him on stage in 2000, and a few years later had the extraordinary privilege of working with him in Anne of Green Gables with Kaleidoscope. During our breaks we would tap dance together in the wings, a small glimpse of the joy and playfulness he carried with him everywhere he went.

Over the years I had the privilege of working alongside Danny many times, as an actor, as a designer, and through his work with IATSE Local 168. No matter the role he was playing, Danny brought an infectious spirit to the room. He always had a joke ready, a mischievous sparkle in his eye, and a song just waiting to burst out. But more than anything, he had an enormous heart and a deep love for theatre and the people who make it.

Danny helped build the artistic community we are part of today, and Kaleidoscope owes so much to his creativity, his generosity, and his unwavering belief in the magic of theatre. We are all better for having known him.”

Dan will be deeply missed.

We figured it was time to jump on the trend.

The truth? None of us at Kaleidoscope have ever fully grown up… which is probably a good thing when your job is creating theatre for young people. 🎭

Behind the meetings, rehearsals, and emails are a group of people who are still big kids at heart.

This Weekend is the The Next Stage Teen Play Reading Festival!

The Next Stage Teen Play Reading Festival is the exciting culmination of the Kaleidoscope Young Company program, where an incredible group of young performers bring staged readings of plays by some of Canada’s top playwrights writing for young audiences to life.

Over the course of the weekend, these talented teens will present five powerful, funny, and thought-provoking plays that explore friendship, identity, imagination, and the challenges of growing up.

This year’s lineup includes:

I Am For You by Mieko Ouchi
Two rivals are cast as Mercutio and Tybalt in their school’s Romeo and Juliet, and must learn the art of stage combat — and maybe cooperation — along the way.

Voices by Athena Kaitlin Trinh
Three friends discover the critical voices in their heads might not be so different after all, and learn how to support each other through the noise.

Intergalactic Superstars by Barry Blinksky
Three very unusual students struggle to fit in at school — leading to some very strange and hilarious consequences.

Geode by Aaron Jan
A student council election spirals into chaos after a not-so-apologetic candidate finds herself at the centre of a school-wide scandal.

Danny, King of the Basement by David S. Craig
A young boy who moves constantly builds friendships through imagination — until he discovers that sometimes finding a home means letting others in.

We’re so proud of our Kaleidoscope community 💗

On February 25, Pink Shirt Day, Kaleidoscope teaching artist Talietha Sangha and Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Studio student Zev were featured on CHEK’s special Pink Shirt Day broadcast, alongside host Maya Kara.

In partnership with the WITS Programs Foundation, CHEK's 44-minute national broadcast shared inspiring stories and practical strategies to help young people lead with kindness, inclusion, and heart. WITS (Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help) equips students with tools to navigate conflict, prevent bullying, and build supportive communities.

We love seeing our artists and students helping to shape safer, more empathetic schools — here in Victoria and across Canada. 💕

Next time you’re visiting the Kaleidoscope Arts Centre, look up—way up—at our west exterior wall. You might spot the faint remains of a historic ghost sign from one of the building’s former occupants: Evans, Coleman & Evans. Thanks to our brick work that took place in the fall, this long forgotten Sign is now visible, that is until its warm enough to repaint!

Ghost signs are hand-painted ads from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that have weathered time, offering a glimpse into the businesses that once shaped our cities. Evans, Coleman & Evans was founded in 1888 and became one of BC’s leading building supply firms, operating in our building from 1911 to 1957 after acquiring the original company, Raymond & Sons (who built the building in 1906).

A small but fascinating piece of local history hiding in plain sight. Pretty cool, hey?
