LATE FAME
August 28 & 29: 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm
Ed Saxberger is a onetime poet and a longtime postal worker, and as he tries to write a poem for the first time in decades, he can’t get past a single phrase: “seasons collide.” Those two words encapsulate the strange storm of awakening and frustration in which Ed finds himself in Late Fame, director Kent Jones’ quiet and often searingly droll feature set in Manhattan’s West Village and SoHo. For the 60-something Ed, a coulda-been who’s unexpectedly “rediscovered,” and who’s played to conflicted perfection by Willem Dafoe, the season of his youth is crashing against his orderly life. It’s unsettling for him, but also invigorating. His downtown haunts teem anew with the ghosts of a scrappier time, when the neighborhood wasn’t filled with designer boutiques and struggling writers and painters could afford to live there. In a prolific career filled with complex and striking characters, the role of Ed Saxberger is a subdued but particularly rich one for Dafoe, himself a veteran of the downtown arts scene.-The Hollywood Reporter

100 Litres of Gold
August 26 & 27: 5:10 pm, 7:00 pm
With an endearing black comedy set in the provinces, which adopts the visual style of a ’60s Western, prolific writer-director Teemu Nikki salutes his country’s (and his family’s) tradition of sahti-making. “100 Liters of Gold” follows two dysfunctional middle-aged sisters, third-generation makers of the strong farmhouse ale. In their village of Sysmä, sahti is a must to mark births, weddings and funerals, as well as almost everything in between. Touching on issues such as alcoholism and family trauma, but with a light touch, Finland’s international Oscar submission provides a breath of fresh air (albeit one redolent with alcohol) amongst the serious dramas in this category.-Variety

Cinema Paradiso
Aug 25: 5:00 & 7:20
A celebration of childhood, friendship, romance and the power of cinema it’s an utterly beguiling, tender and funny film about the friendship between a young boy, Toto (Salvatore Cascio) and the gruff, uneducated man who runs the local picture house, Alfredo (Phillipe Noiret) – as remembered by the now grown-up Toto after learning of the old man’s passing. Set in Sicily, it looks lovely and is full of classic, memorable moments, including a tear-jerking finale. -Express UK

The Devil Wears Prada 2
August 23 & 24: 5:00 pm, 7:15 pm
Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt all return in this sweet sequel that was made for a night out with friends. When we pick up years after the events of 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, things look very different at Runway: Magazines aren’t selling, journalism is in crisis and budget cuts are a constant. When Andrea (Hathaway) is laid off from her Important, Serious newspaper job (alongside all of her friends), she gets roped into working with Miranda (Streep) all over again. A bad job is often better than no job. And we’re off to the races! Nigel (Tucci) still lords over the fashion closet, while Emily (Blunt) has departed for greener pastures in the designer world.-US

AMARCORD - Spotlight Italia!
August 19 & 20: 5:00 pm, 7:20 pm
If ever there was a movie made entirely out of nostalgia and joy, by a filmmaker at the heedless height of his powers, that movie is Federico Fellini’s “Amarcord.” The title means “I remember” in the dialect of Rimini, the seaside town of his youth, but these are memories of memories, transformed by affection and fantasy and much improved in the telling.-Roger Ebert

POWER BALLAD
August 16 & 17: 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm
Since 2007’s “Once,” the Irish writer-director has focused his films on the redemptive capacity of music. Carney, who was once a bassist for the Frames, knows from experience. From “Sing Street” to “Flora and Son,” he has made unabashedly earnest tales where a song, or just picking up an instrument, changes lives. This can, undoubtedly, lead Carney into sentimental territory. Lucky for him, his chosen subject — music — is more worthy of sentiment than almost anything else. Yet the song doesn’t quite remain the same in “Power Ballad,” a movie that begins with the gentle sweetness Carney is known for, but detours into something more discordant.-Jack Coyle

THE INVITE
August 14 & 15: 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A couple who are experiencing fissures in their marriage entertain another couple in their apartment one evening. Things get tense, and more than a little bonkers. We mention the stock setup of director Olivia Wilde’s funny, occasionally filthy comedy of manners only to emphasize how wonderful the payoff is — it’s the sort of one-location, star-driven ensemble piece that could have merely been a theatrical exercise, and somehow manages to avoid being either stagy or stodgy. Even more impressive is how the actors sync up their own unique performance styles; you wouldn’t think that Seth Rogen’s signature heh-heh-heh stunted-bro persona would mesh with Edward Norton’s ironic take on another egocentric blowhard or Penélope Cruz’s sultry chilliness. But like a supergroup, they somehow find a rhythm that makes the disparate parts sound better together.-Rolling Stone

MADDIE'S SECRET
August 12 & 13: 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm
Wickedly sharp and surprisingly moving, John Early’s Maddie’s Secret is a melodramatic comedy like few others. Mixing in influences as varied as Todd Haynes and Douglas Sirk with afterschool TV specials and a level of camp perfected in movies like But I’m A Cheerleader, Early’s feature debut is a refreshing send-up of TV and movie tropes that embraces sentimentality with a cheeky sense of humor. Taking on the competitive world of social platform shows and food influencing, the comedian develops a funny yet poignant movie that skewers the present-day media landscape and addresses a sensitive topic in the age of Ozempic: eating disorders. Along with his longtime creative co-star Kate Berlant, Early arrives on the big screen with With a dedicated-to-the-bit performance and a fearless screenplay, Maddie’s Secret is unafraid to mix serious issues with giddy silliness.-AVClub
