One of the partnerships that makes the Victoria International Wine Festival unique is our partnership with Tourism Cowichan to create the Cowichan Wine Pavilion. This year, the pavilion will feature an incredible showcase from Unsworth Vineyards Blue Grouse Estate Winery , Zanatta Winery , Cobble Hill Winery Telegraph Estate Winery - Enrico Winery ), plus a few surprises still to come.

Cowichan is a region shaped by farming, food, craft and a deep connection to the land. The name Quw’utsun is rooted in the Hul’q’umi’num word shqw’utsun, meaning “to warm one’s back in the sun.” That warmth, combined with the Valley’s coastal climate and fertile farmland, has helped create one of Canada’s most distinctive emerging wine regions. At the Festival, the Cowichan Wine Pavilion gives you the chance to taste what makes this place different, all in one spot.

Tickets for the event are on route to sell out. Selling at https://vicwf26.eventbrite.ca

Three easy questions to ask yourself when tasting wine:

1. What do I smell? Fruit, flowers, spice, herbs or something else?
2. What do I taste? Is it fresh, rich, dry, sweet, light or bold?
3. What do I like about it? Is it crisp, smooth, fruity, soft or easy to drink?

What are we missing?

Wine tasting gets a lot easier when you stop trying to find the “right” answer and start noticing what stands out to you. These are the kinds of simple questions that can help you learn more about your own palate at the Victoria International Wine Festival. Tickets are running low on the Saturday & Friday evening tasting sessions. Grab them now at https://vicwf26.eventbrite.ca

How to get better at buying wine?

Don't assume spending more guarantees you'll like it more!

Wine price can reflect many things, such as where and how the grapes were grown, production costs, ageing, scarcity, reputation and demand. It isn't simply a scale of how delicious a wine will be to you.

Instead, start learning what you actually like: light or full-bodied, crisp or rich, dry or sweet, fruity or earthy.

Being able to describe those preferences is much more useful in a wine shop than simply asking for a “good bottle.” 🍷

What do you look for when buying wine?
