"My name is Michael Kaeshammer. I am a pianist and singer, and I have been involved with the Victoria Jazz Society (VJS) since 1996, performing on stage at numerous Victoria Jazz Festivals as well as throughout the Society’s year-round programming. I moved to Canada with my family as a teenager in 1995.

From the very beginning, the VJS recognized potential in me and my music and chose to support my development as an emerging artist. That early belief and encouragement had a profound impact on my life and career. I would go so far as to say that the support I received from the VJS in those formative years played an important role in my decision to pursue a musical career in Canada.

Over the years, I have also witnessed firsthand the important role the VJS plays in supporting artists at various stages of their careers. The Society has provided a platform for countless emerging musicians, many of whom have gone on to build significant careers. At the same time, the VJS brings internationally recognized artists to Victoria, enriching the cultural life of the community and creating opportunities for local audiences and musicians alike.

The Victoria Jazz Society is a vital part of the cultural fabric of Victoria and Vancouver Island. Its commitment to presenting exceptional music, nurturing young talent, and creating opportunities for artists has had a lasting impact on the region’s cultural landscape.

I am proud to support the Victoria Jazz Society." – Michael Kaeshammer

Thank you Michael Kaeshammer for your support! 🎹

"As a local Victoria musician and bandleader who tours globally, I can tell you that the Victoria Jazz Society does far more than put on a festival: it creates work for musicians, and fosters networks amongst the international jazz community. I cannot tell you how many opportunities for me have arisen directly from meeting touring jazz artists face-to-face that the VJS brought in… from workshops and concerts, collaborations and business advice, it creates international music connections. It brings extraordinary music and musicians to our doorstep for everyone from youth to seniors to experience world-class art to be changed by. They present musical performances outdoors and indoors, from parks to theatres, jazz clubs to other arts spaces at no-cost to affordable rates. They organize workshops with world-class musicians and opportunities for young and emerging artists to learn and perform. The Society invests in the present and future of music on Vancouver Island. Local musicians need arts presentation partners for listening space concerts. Without non-profits and professional arts presentation teams like VJS, we are left to self-rent venues, figure out advertising, lighting/sound production, insurance etc. and put under tremendous financial risk and strain to try to find ways to share their compositions and arrangements, and gauge audience impact before recording and touring. The Jazz Society nimble and hard-working team does all the hard unseen work to bring artists and audiences together. It is a cornerstone of Vancouver Island and is foundational for the City of Victoria to be a vibrant city for culture. Please help keep this vital organization alive by supporting its grassroots fundraising campaign at any level you are able. If it is within your means, stop, think and connect them with potential corporate sponsors or high-wealth donors, and commit to make them a part of your annual and legacy giving." - Angela Verbrugge

“My name is Owen Chow. I have been involved with the VJS by performing on stage, and I support the VJS because it has been and continues to be a crucial part of the Vancouver Island arts scene. We are extremely lucky to have such an organized, professional and caring group of music lovers, who work extremely hard to put on events throughout the year such as the Victoria International Jazz Fest. These concerts allow people to experience world-class music for a full week and inspire the next generation of musicians.

When I was in middle school I participated in the U-Jam young all stars and we got a chance to play at the Jazz Festival. I still remember clearly the day leading up to the big performance. Playing a real festival was one of the coolest feelings I'd had and was my first real experience playing a show.

The VJS puts precedent in giving future generations the opportunity and experience to develop and thrive, and they have certainly influenced my career as a musician.” – Owen Chow

Thank you Owen Chow for your support! 🎺

Four weeks ago, Chris Botti and his fantastic band blew us all away at the Royal Theatre in an unforgettable live performance.

After 40+ years of live music, it’s hard to believe that this may have been the last concert the Victoria Jazz Society ever presents. But, we will remain positive that we can keep the music playing – with your help.

If you care about the live music scene in Victoria, please make a pledge today and help the Victoria Jazz Society achieve its goal by October 30: jazzvictoria.ca/keepthemusicplaying
