September Art Hub Studio hours just dropped!

Next week! Join us Friday, August 28 at the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park for the opening performance of Peter Morin and Jimmie Kilpatrick’s Love Songs to End Colonization, an ongoing participatory karaoke project rooted in kindness, joy, futurity, and collective voice.

Repurposing popular love songs, Morin and Kilpatrick use karaoke as a methodology for confronting and dismantling settler colonialism. Everyone is invited to participate: sing a song, sing along, clap, dance, or simply witness and soak in the music.

The performance launches a new presentation of Love Songs to End Colonization, co-organized by Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Open Space, and curated by Toby Lawrence, AGGV Curator of Contemporary Art; Doug Jarvis, Open Space Executive Director; and Tomas Jonsson, project curator.

Following the opening performance, join us at Open Space for an Artists Conversation with Peter Morin and Jimmie Kilpatrick on Saturday, August 29 at 2pm, followed by the exhibition on view through October 3.

As we transition into the Fall, we at Alter Arts are also going through a transition. We want to send a warm thank you to Jax for coordinating the Art Hub and the Cozy Q***r affair since November 2023. Her work and energy has made such an impact on our community and we are deeply thankful for her time and contributions. Jax will be staying involved in Alter Arts as a Board Member as she begins her journey into her Graduate Degree! Congratulations Jax and best wishes on this next chapter.

As we say our goodbyes to Jax, we will say hello to our new coordinator, Lola Ball!

A liltle bit about Lola:

"Originally from the UK, Lauren is a community arts worker with more than thirteen years of experience in event production, arts administration, outreach, volunteer coordination, and community engagement. Her professional credits include social media management in London's West End, where she met the Spice Girls and was dubbed a "tireless hype merchant" in the Daily Mail. Now living on Lekwungen territory, she has worked with organizations including Atomic Vaudeville, SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles, and Salty Broad Productions to facilitate joyful chaos.

A dedicated Burner, Lauren co-leads Camp Camp... But Is It Camp?! at Otherworld. She is passionate about shared space, collective effervescence, and her greatest joy is singing with a group to promote well-being and spiritual growth."

We are pleased to announce that A Cozy Q***r Affair has received approval for our final grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage!

Thanks to funding from the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program we will be able to expand our programming to incorporate even more local. We have been dreaming up some new ideas and we have something special in store for you this year!

Our next virtual production meeting is coming up Tuesday August 18th at 7pm and we are still looking for a Marketing Lead! If you or one of your pals would be the right fit, tag them below!

We will be releasing our artist application forms shortly to recruit acoustic performers, downtempo DJs, visual art installations, poets and story tellers, workshop leads, and more! Stay tuned.

DigiCamp: Animation Magic Summer Camp Workshop!

What if you could learn to Make Magic?

This is a beginner-friendly 3D art class for creative kids aged 10 to 14. Students will get a chance to design their own 3D wizard character and create magic spell effects.

The Community Art Hub is partnering with Alchemy VFX to offer a week of DigiCamp: Animation Magic! This beginner friendly 3D Art class for kids aged 10-14 is taking place this August. The workshops will be offered in three different locations.

The Community Art Hub will be hosting one of the workshop offerings in the week of August 4th to 6th from 1:30pm to 3:30pm

This event is for anyone LGBTQIA+ or questioning to come on by the Art Hub and do some art! Got projects to finish? Need a safe space to hang out in for a few hours? Been meaning to check out the Art Hub but don't know when to go? Want to hang out with other q***r folk and get creative? This is the time and place for you! Hope to see you there ❤

We ask for a suggested donation of $5 for access to all the art supplies in the hub, payable by cash or card.
