In 2018, Steven Dragonn and Xiaoyan Yang co-founded Canton-sardine, an artist-and-curator-driven contemporary art space established in Vancouver, which has since attracted renowned national and international artists/collectives.
I first met Steven in 2023, and have since been in collaboration with him. I have learnt and loved his immersive story-telling through film and photography, and how he infused his art with details and symbolism. The first time I went into the Canton sardine, I fell in love with the space he created. It is an understatement to say that it is a dream come true to mount 安/Girl Under in this space. Steven has been the warmest, most supportive presence and I imagined all the past artists that he curated feel the same way.
His show is on until July 4. It is evocative, stunning, and thoughtful.
After July 4, I will have the privilege to perform the multidiscipline dance work in here before this space disappears.
安/Girl Under will be performed in the future in other venues, just never again in the beautiful, intimate, unique Canton Sardine. I am so grateful to Steven for creating this space, and for his continued friendship and inspiration.

Crossmaneuver and House of Indian Dance Year-End Student Recital with Special Guests Paper Rabbits is happening this coming weekend! Happy International Dance Day! Today is the day! A work-in-progress will be shared this afternoon at the Salon Series at Whatlab.

Immense gratitude to Co.Erasga for the opportunity, care, and support in making this work possible.

This work is the final work in a triptych I’ve been developing over the last five years exploring identity, memory, and belonging. Inspired by the Chinese character 基 (ji), meaning foundation, the work asks how architectural forms hold the spiritual, cultural, and heart knowledge we carry within us.

My collaborative team has truly been a dream to work with, bringing fluidity, generosity, and imagination to what at times felt like a daunting subject. Deep gratitude, love, and respect to all of them.
