COMING SOON! The final night of Park Theatre’s inaugural Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair will feature a screening of Uli Edel’s unflinching, harrowing portrait of a young German girl’s descent into addiction, CHRISTIANE F. Inspired by a true story, this title was selected by friend of the venue, Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, who will also be joining us in-person to offer an introduction.

Adapted from actress and musician Cristiane Felscherinow’s grim account of her teenage years, CHRISTIANE F. depicts the impact of West Berlin’s mid-to-late-70s he**in epidemic on one of its youngest and luckiest survivors. On the cusp of fourteen, David Bowie-worshipping Cristiane begins slipping out from under the watch of her divorced mother and spending time at hip discotheque Sound. There she falls in love with Detlev , whose recent experiments with he**in soon have her hooked.

Working with first-time actors and shooting on location with real-life regulars of Zoo Station’s notorious drug cruising scene, director Uli Edel unflinchingly captures the degradation of each phase of ju**ie life, from underage prostitution to brutal withdrawals to the seemingly endless vows to “go straight.” Bowie himself appears in a concert performance of “Station to Station”; the film’s soundtrack is a virtual compendium of the epochal musician’s celebrated “Berlin period” and a perfect sonic evocation of nightclubbing’s dark side.

“A sad, sordid look at the horrors of drug addiction, and ‘horrors’ is the operative word..” (New York Times)

COMING SOON! The city shines brightest at night. /// : Cinema of Despair is taking over the screen Park Theatre June 19-25. Included in the curated series this year is a screening of the 2014 thriller NIGHTCRAWLER, which was selected by local filmmaker Zach Lipovsky (FREAKS, FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES).

A gritty urban comedy noir, a scathing, ‘Network’-worthy disembowelment of television newsgatherers that will leave you craving a shower.” (San Diego Reader)

Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives by scavenging and petty theft. He stumbles into a new career as a cameraman and — armed with a camcorder and police scanner — begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a shopworn news director (Rene Russo) who welcomes the chance to raise her station’s ratings, Louis goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the “money shot.” With Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton.

“A mesmerizing cipher, Lou is a spiritual descendant of Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, and of the withholding protagonists in the existential French crime films of Robert Bresson and Jean-Pierre Melville” (TIME Magazine)

FRIDAY! We are all sinners. /// Ryan Coogler’s heart-pounding masterpiece SINNERS returns to Park Theatre’s screen for one epic 70mm 📽️encore this Friday, June 19.

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan, in a dual role that won Oscar gold) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. With Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo.

“‘Sinners’ is a redemption movie, a revenge movie with elements of Blaxploitation, and certainly a red-blood-soaked horror movie; it’s also deeply romantic and has the rhythms and audaciousness of some of our boldest musicals.” (Filmspotting)

“It’s both a wildly ambitious meditation on American history and a rip-roaring good time.” (Slate)

“It is a phantasm of Black Southern delights.” (New York Magazine / Vulture)

COMING SOON! Every family has a secret. /// The Park Theatre is thrilled to be taking part in American Cinematheque’s international : Cinema of Despair series, which runs June 19-25.

One of the curated films in our lineup comes from local actor (and friend of the venue) Finn Wolfhard, who selected one of the original Dogme 95 titles, Thomas Vinterberg’s THE CELEBRATION, calling it “hilarious, and it has some unbelievable performances.”

Released in 1998, Winterberg’s international breakthrough is a lacerating family drama that uses the economic and aesthetic freedoms of digital video to achieve an annihilating level emotional intensity. It may be the only “comedy” in this year’s series, but don’t get it twisted - it’s still (wonderfully) bleak AF.

On a wealthy man’s sixtieth birthday, a sprawling group of family and friends convenes at his country estate for a celebration that soon spirals into bedlam, as bombshell revelations threaten to tear away the veneer of bourgeois respectability and expose the traumas roiling beneath.

COMING SOON! 3 Hours of Retro Cartoons, Commercials and PSAs – And All the Cereal You Can Eat! // 🥣The Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party 📺 is returning to the Park Theatre on June 27 with a “school’s out” event featuring an all-new lineup of retro TV goodness, covered in sugary cereal. It’s Volume XIII! 😃

Kids today may not realize the significance of the Saturday morning ritual, but once upon a time, we had to wait a whole week to get our cartoon fix, and when we got it, we tended to binge. Well – welcome to The Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party – that special time when kids and kids-at-heart get to relive the exciting Saturday Morning ritual of non-stop retro cartoons, and binge on the multi-colored sugary cereals that used to be a part of every “balanced” breakfast!

The cartoon lineup is always a mystery, but expect to see monsters, sci-fi, sleuths, superheroes and all kinds of 2D silliness, both faves and obscurities spanning the ’30s through the ’90s, all punctuated with vintage commercials, PSAs and station IDs for a 3-hour trip down memory lane! So get ready for a sugar rush and an explosion of nostalgia all wrapped up in one candy-coated package.
