Music on Main At a Music on Main concert, there are great musicians, engaging music, and the chance to make new friends, meet the artists, and escape your to-do list.

Launched to critical acclaim in 2006, Music on Main is dedicated to producing classical, new, and genre-bending music in environments that are both casual and stimulating, expanding access to the arts along Vancouver’s Main Street corridor, and engaging audiences in new venues throughout the city. A concert series at Heritage Hall and a Tuesday night series at the Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club are at the core of Music on Main’s artistic activities, with a strong focus on music of our time and featuring excellent professional musicians in innovative concert formats. By the end of its fourth season, Music on Main will have produced more than 100 events in the City of Vancouver. With the goal of integrating concert music into the lives of its audiences, Music on Main adopts innovative and refreshing formats for concert-going that create social environments and build community. At a typical Music on Main concert at Heritage Hall, the bar opens at 7:00 PM, the one-hour concert runs from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and the audience is invited to hang out with the musicians and each other after the concert. During “A Month of Tuesdays” at the Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club, audience members order dinner and drinks before the concert or at intermission, then when the bar service stops for the performance, everyone listens with a renewed intensity. These formats lead to relaxed yet engaged listening environments, environments often lacking in the classical and new music world.

Meet Ilana Waniuk, joining us at The Highbrow on September 27 for Between Shadow and Light.

Ilana Waniuk is a violinist, creator and curator with interests ranging from improvisation to visual arts. Her creative work explores digital and analog materials, often merging graphic notation and improvisation with fixed and live projections.

She is also a founding member of in^set, a trio dedicated to creation, improvisation and experimentation.

Described as a musician with the “…rare ability to translate her intellectual insights into performance energy” (Ontario Arts Foundation Jury), Ilana has performed across the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Argentina and Mexico. She was a winner of the 2014 Ontario Arts Foundation Orford String Quartet Award and can be heard on Thin Edge’s Juno-nominated Dark Flower (Redshift Records, 2023).

Ilana holds a doctorate in contemporary performance from the University of California, San Diego, where her research explored collaborative audiovisual practices.
