Join artist and filmmaker Laura Taler for a half-day class tracing the evolution of her practice โ€” from her 1995 dancefilm classic the village trilogy to her 2025 genre-defying new work Matryoshka Crush.

Through case studies of her films and installations, Laura will lead in-depth discussions on the production process, share practical tools for communicating ideas to collaborators, and explore spatial considerations in installation and screening contexts.

Open to all artists โ€” performers, filmmakers, visual artists, dancers, musicians, and anyone curious about movement and the camera.

about

Dances for a Small Stage premiered in May 2002 at the Royal Pub on Granville Street in Vancouver. Since then, Small Stage has created and produced over 60+ instalments of in Vancouver, around the Lower Mainland and has appeared three times at Ottawaโ€™s National Arts Centre (2006 Canada Dance Festival, 2009 BC Scene and 2015 Magnetic North Festival + Canada Dance Festival).

Each Small Stage show is a collection of new and innovative dance works that are 3-7 minutes in length.

The series showcases a wide diversity of styles and cultures that reflect the depth of unique and talented artists including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Vogue, House, Bharatanatyam, Odessi, Flamenco, Mรฉtis Jig, Chinese Contemporary and Classical, Japanese Contemporary + Classical, Bhaแน…gแน›ฤ and Scottish Highland, Burlesque and many more.
