Theatre Under The Stars Vancouver Alumni

Theatre Under The Stars Vancouver Alumni If you've been part of TUTS at any point in the past 70+ years, this page is for you! You've been a teacher or a student, or both at different times. Thank you!

As a TUTS alumna or alumnus, you may have appeared on the stage, played in the orchestra, worked backstage or volunteered for 'front-of-house'. You've dodged raccoons, tolerated the mosquitos, signed your name on a dressing room wall, sung and danced in the rain (literally), wiped down chairs, answered the phone, poured coffee, sold tickets, handed out programmes, played large-scale Tetris with se

t pieces, pulled a curtain or pushed a broom. You've designed, choreographed, built, programmed, directed, stage managed, administered. Perhaps you got your start in show business here; this is where the theatre grabbed you and didn't let go, where you first thought this is what I'm supposed to do with my life. Or maybe your time at TUTS was something you did "just for fun"...but you know that in fact, there was no "just" about it; the things you learned and the people you met will stay with you throughout your life. Regardless, one thing is certain: you're part of the TUTS family, and part of a long and colourful history that goes back more than half a century. The TUTS Alumni Association is, in part, about celebrating that past: reuniting with old friends at our annual Alumni Night, reliving fond memories, enjoying the wonderful community that we have all built together through these past many summers at Malkin Bowl. It's also about the present - the fantastic shows that you see on the TUTS stage now. But perhaps most importantly, it's about the future. It's about making sure that TUTS can continue to be the one-of-a-kind community, training ground, hub of talent and source of great summer entertainment that it has been for the past 70-odd years and counting. We hope that all alumni will be inspired to renew their connections to TUTS and look for ways to support the company going forward. There are any number of ways to do that: you can add your contact information to our database, buy a season subscription, volunteer some time to a committee, and/or support upcoming events in our off-season. More importantly, and as you well know, TUTS exists because of the support of our members, and we invite you to renew your membership right now by sending in a membership form (download it from our website at www.tuts.ca) or donating directly through www.canadahelps.org. A donation of as little as $25 gets you a tax receipt and other benefits. Finally, we would also just love to hear from you: whether it's stories about your experiences with TUTS in the past, feedback on the current season, or ideas for the future. Please feel free to e-mail us anytime via [email protected]. Jane Wace
Alumni Committee Chair

Hello, TUTS friends! Please be advised that we’ve had a small outbreak of spam comments on a few of our recent posts. In these comments, someone pretends to be selling special TUTS-branded alumni merch (with accompanying photo of a T-shirt or similar). This is a scam; TUTS would never try to sell you anything through this page. Please do not engage with posts or comments like this, and please message the page or tag us in a comment on the same post to let us know if you see anything like this happening. (Thank you to the folks who alerted us in this case!) We have hidden the comments in question from public view and banned the individuals or bots who made them, and we are looking into the security settings of the page to see what can be done to prevent this happening again.

With heavy hearts, we recognize the passing earlier this year of a wonderful, kind, fun-loving friend and TUTS company member of long standing: Ron Kassell. Thank you to fellow TUTS alumna Francesca Vivanti for these details of Ron's life:

Ronald Kassell (May 16, 1929 - February 2, 2025)

Ron was born in Sheffield, England where he met the love of his life, Marie. They were both instrumental in resurrecting Theatre Under The Stars in 1969 and laying the foundations of the company as we know it today. Ron spent the best part of 40 years working on the TUTS Board of Directors, rotating through different roles including that of President. Among his many other contributions, Ron was a very successful businessman, and he used that acumen to bring TUTS back from the brink when Malkin Bowl was all but destroyed by fire in 1982. He retired from his involvement with TUTS in the late 1990s, receiving the well-deserved title of VIP Lifetime Member. His dedication and knowledge were admirable and invaluable!

A true gentleman with class and dignity, Ron had that wickedly dry British sense of humour that kept us laughing when we really needed it. He is greatly missed.
