Tonight! Celluloid Social Club is proud to be a Community Partner on the documentary 'Last Movies' at Vancouver International Film Festival on Oct 4 & 6.

More about the film:
Last Movies directed by Stanley Schtinter
"What would film history look like viewed not through the rise and fall of studios, actors, and directors, but according to a different organizing principle — the final movies watched by various cultural figures before they died? Moving from Franz Kafka (The Kid) and John Dillinger (Manhattan Melodrama) to Bette Davis (Waterloo Bridge) and Kurt Cobain (The Piano), British artist Stanley Schtinter embraces this simple concept to remap the entire history of the medium. Narrated by Jeremy Irons, the result is a dizzyingly detailed, mordantly funny, and deliberately skewed love letter to the movies.

Recalling the essay-films of Harun Farocki and Thom Andersen (Los Angeles Plays Itself), Last Movies is scrupulously researched, darkly humorous, and always entertaining. Like avant-garde artists from the Surrealists onward, Schtinter embraces chance as his organizing principle. Recognizing that all of us, too, will have our own last movies, it offers a scintillating twist on Tom Gunning’s concept of the cinema as “a machine for killing time.”"

Tuesday, October 6, 4:15 pm, International Village 8

The Celluloid Social Club had a baby and it's called SlideNight!
Okay, maybe “baby” is stretching it a little—
but we’re pretty excited about this one.

SlideNight, a night dedicated to photography and lens base contemporary art was inspired by the format and spirit of The Celluloid Social Club: bring artists and audiences together, project some great images, keep things informal, and create an evening where people can look at art, talk, hang out, and hopefully discover something they didn’t expect.

Created by Julie Lee, John Goldsmith and Roger Larry, SlideNight has now reached its seventh edition—and it’s moving into a new home!

SlideNight 7: Black Femme Image-Making and Self-Representation
Thursday, September 10
Doors 6:30 pm | Show 7:15 pm
The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver
Admission by donation, courtesy of BMO

For this edition, SlideNight brings together three exciting artists—Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, Karice Mitchell and Rebecca Bair—whose work explores the body, identity, archives, land and the ways Blackness and Black womanhood are represented and reimagined through photography and moving image.

The evening is curated by Olumoroti (Moroti) Soji-George, Director/Curator of Gallery Gachet, and SlideNight co-founder Roger Larry, a veteran feature film writer director, producer and contemporary artist; and a longtime friend of the Celluloid Social Club and Paul Armstrong’s partner on two feature films, Cool Daddy and Paradise Laundered.

SlideNight began at Gallery 881 and has featured artists and curators including Mark Lewis, Marion Penner Bancroft, Elizabeth Zvonar, Michelle Sound, Annie Briard, Jake Kimble, Helga Pakasaar and John O’Brian.

So, yes, we may be biased—but we think this particular offspring has turned out pretty well.

Come out and support the newest member of the Celluloid Social Club extended family!
