NEW ZEALAND: Rugby Community Pushes Back Against Haka Used in Sikh Protest

Members of New Zealand’s rugby fraternity have spoken out after a Haka was performed during a protest aimed at a Sikh religious procession in Auckland, describing the act as inappropriate and inflammatory.

Former players and analysts said the Haka is a symbol of respect and unity, not something to be used to confront peaceful groups. They pointed out that Māori and Sikh cultures share deep traditions of discipline, service, and defending others.

“To pit one warrior tradition against another misses the point entirely,” one rugby voice said. “That’s not the New Zealand we know.”

Rugby figures also drew attention to the Sikh community’s positive role in the country, praising their strong work ethic and commitment to helping others. Sikh-run community kitchens were noted for providing support during times of hardship, including throughout the COVID-19 period.

“They’ve consistently shown up for this country,” another commentator said.

Local leaders have since labelled the incident unsettling, calling on authorities to uphold religious freedom as concerns grow over increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric.
