Excavation Theatre

Excavation Theatre Uncovering that all good things are Wild and Free Excavation Theatre shares unheard voices and stories that are controversial, compelling, and provocative.

Excavation Theatre gratefully acknowledges that our work takes place on the stolen, occupied, ancestral lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), ḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), and Semiahma (Semiahmoo) Nations, who have been here since time immemorial. Excavation Theatre strives to create high quality theatrical product

ions that provoke action and create new conversations surrounding issues of s*xual consent and reproductive health. From devised creations to traditional theatre, we focus on stories centered around societal injustices, that seek to dismantle s*xist ideologies and practices. We explore the concept that anything at any time, in any place, can be a theatre performance — one only has to dig deep enough to discover it. At Excavation Theatre we strive to centre justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in all our practices and policies. In casting and hiring, we strongly seek to work with artists who self-identify as members of equity-seeking groups. This includes, but is not limited to, any individuals identifying as IBPOC, LGBTQ2IA+, d/Deaf, living with disabilities, and/or facing other systemic barriers in our industry. Past Productions include:
Meanwhile (2013) - Vancouver Fringe Festival, recipient of Best Site Specific Show
AFTER (2014)
The Old Haunt (2015)
Ithaka (2016) - winner of the Jessie Richardson award for Best Supporting Actress (Small Theatre) for Yoshié Bancroft's performance as Evie and Pixie

More about the show:
GRACIE is a one woman show that tells the story of a girl raised in a fundamentalist community in Bountiful, BC. As the play opens, Gracie is eight years old and moving with her mother, brother, and sisters from her new community. Her mother has been assigned to a new husband; she becomes his eighteenth wife. In five acts, Gracie plays herself at five ages and also gives voice to thirteen other characters, including her older sister Celeste – who becomes a wife at sixteen, a mother at seventeen – and her brother Billy, who is forced out of the community just a few years after the family arrives in Canada. Gracie is fifteen when the play ends, again with a journey as she herself leaves the community.

This show runs from February 15th-18th in Gibsons, BC at the Heritage Playhouse, and February 22nd-25th at the VanCity Culture Lab in Vancouver, BC.
*Travel to Gibsons may be necessary for the lighting/projection designer on Thursday, February 14th. Transportation, per diem, and billet provided.

Thank you Jo Ledingham for our first review!

"Directed by Jessica Anne Nelson...this is a sweet little production with characters we want to see thrive. Moscovitch’s dialogue feels authentic and honest"

"Bronwyn Henderson is Sophie and, by turns, is innocent and wise....We feel the hopelessness and danger of Sophie’s situation"

Don't miss your chance to see the show yourself before it's gone!

Our Story

Excavation Theatre began the summer of 2013 when Artistic and Creative Director Jessica Anne Nelson, as part of the Onsite program in the Vancouver Fringe Festival under the guidance of Kendra Fanconi and David Jordan, created the one audience member at a time production Meanwhile along the waters edge of False Creek on Granville Island. From that moment forward, Excavation Theatre has strived with its pieces to bring together the natural elements with beautiful storytelling. Watch for Excavation Theatre’s next project that is an immersive exploration of the technology of our present mixed with the stories of the past from Nelson’s Grandmother’s life growing up on Commercial Drive in Vancouver during the 1940’s and 50’s, hopefully as a way to bridge the gap between the past and the present for an audience.

MANDATE: Excavation Theatre’s mandate is to present stories from unheard voices within our world. We strive to create compelling work set in some way outside of the parameters of traditional theatre, and thus hopefully to find that anything at any time, in any place, can be a theatre performance, one only has to dig deep enough to discover it. Past Productions include: Meanwhile (2013) - Vancouver Fringe Festival, recipient of Best Site Specific Show AFTER (2014) The Old Haunt (2015) Ithaka (2016) - winner of the Jessie Richardson award for Best Supporting Actress (Small Theatre) for Yoshié Bancroft's performance as Evie and Pixie GIRLS!
