This poster reproduces the 1964 pop art painting Vicki! I--I Thought I Heard Your Voice!
The piece was created to promote Roy Lichtenstein's exhibition at Kesterner- Gesselschaft in Hannover in 1968. The image is a classic example of Lichtenstein at his best and most recognizable - Ben-Day dots, a beautiful blonde, and a speech bubble implying ambiguous melodrama beneath.

Gordon Smith (1919 - 2020) was a prominent Canadian artist active in the Vancouver art scene for over five decades.

Working in many styles and mediums over his lifetime, this print is an excellent example of his shift to geometric abstraction in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when he began to experiment with op art, flatness and hard-edged line. The work of this period relied on relationships of colour and questions of perspective achieved through crisp lines rather than gestures of brushwork.

A prolific artist, Smith’s work is extensively collected both privately and by major galleries across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

This print is from the Centennial Suite Project, a suite of 13 prints that was produced by the faculty and administration of Simon Fraser University with thirteen of that generations most notable artists. Each artist designed the prints specifically for the suite to be realized by Master printer Robert Bigelow for the Visual Arts in the Centre for Communications and the Arts at Simon Fraser University. This work is in the collection at the Tate London and MOMA

In the mid to late 1960's and early 1970's Gordon Smith’s work showed a shift in expression. The prints and paintings of this time are rooted in geometric abstraction. These formalist works move away from loose abstraction to highly organized compositions where colour is applied in even and controlled layers. They rely on relationships of colour and questions of perspective achieved through crisp lines rather than gestures of brushwork.

Sarah’s paintings are largely concerned with clarity, equilibrium, and the expressive possibilities of vibrant colour. Hard-edged abstraction has an interesting duality: it hides energy behind order and is capable of great emotional variance despite a minimal vocabulary and flat surfaces. To achieve hard edges Sarah makes extensive use of vinyl, tape, custom-made templates and digital renderings, but the physical act of painting is always paramount. Brush strokes, the natural lumps and swooshes of paint, these form the counter-balance to the rigid formality of design.

Chernoff Fine Art is pleased to present The Hard Edge of Cool Media in collaboration with Trapp Projects and Bruce Eyewear

In the mid-1960s, Vancouver saw significant shifts in contemporary art away from gestural abstraction towards more non-organic forms of expression that could be described as geometric, hard edge, minimal and even Pop Art. The artwork in this exhibition has been selected from artists who played a major role in propagating this new modern art.
