Sarah’s paintings are largely concerned with clarity, equilibrium, and the expressive possibilities of vibrant colour. Hard-edged abstraction has an interesting duality: it hides energy behind order and is capable of great emotional variance despite a minimal vocabulary and flat surfaces. To achieve hard edges Sarah makes extensive use of vinyl, tape, custom-made templates and digital renderings, but the physical act of painting is always paramount. Brush strokes, the natural lumps and swooshes of paint, these form the counter-balance to the rigid formality of design.

Chernoff Fine Art is pleased to present The Hard Edge of Cool Media in collaboration with Trapp Projects and Bruce Eyewear

In the mid-1960s, Vancouver saw significant shifts in contemporary art away from gestural abstraction towards more non-organic forms of expression that could be described as geometric, hard edge, minimal and even Pop Art. The artwork in this exhibition has been selected from artists who played a major role in propagating this new modern art.
