Before and after of VFX Compositing student Mai’s actor replacement project, from filming in-house to putting herself on screen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness using her Nuke compositing skills.

Filming in-house gives students the chance to create personalized shots that make their reels stand out. And yes, it’s pretty fun too.

Next Compositing intake: September 14

A look at the curriculum from our specialized FX TD program.

Part 4: VELLUM.

Working in Houdini, students explore constraint based soft body dynamics across cloth, strings, struts, grains and dynamic constraints. The goal is not only to learn Vellum, but to create a strong demo reel with a Vellum shot that showcases skills applicable to character FX, fabric motion and organic movement.

Vellum is one of the specialized subjects in our FX TD curriculum, alongside Procedural Geometry, Particles, Rigid Body Dynamics, Pyro and FLIP.

Part 3: RIGID BODY DYNAMICS.

Digital destruction is one of the first things many people think of when they picture visual effects. Working in Houdini, students use RBD, constraints and physics to simulate cracking, collapsing and breaking objects through hands-on projects, creating the kinds of effects seen in action-heavy VFX shots.

This skill is then turned into one of the shots students create for their demo reels, along with procedural geometry, particles, Vellum, Pyro and FLIP.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a fantastic group of participants to our Intro to Nuke Summer Intensive.

Over the course of the week, they explored the fundamentals of compositing, learned their way around Nuke, and took their first steps toward developing a new VFX skill set. It's always rewarding to introduce more people to visual effects and see their progress over just a few days.

We still have a few in-person VFX for Filmmakers Summer Intensives coming up this summer, including Screen Burn-In and Green Screen.
