“My artistic practice embodies the influences, tensions and contradictions that define the postmodern world. At once, my works exhibit the paradoxical tendency to be irreverent, frivolous, and playful, as well as thoroughly engaged in critical reflection. Admittedly, my aesthetic is driven by a hedonistic engagement with visual culture, yet I remain apprehensive about the all- encompassing diversions of contemporary society. Although my works are non-functional, I often employ vessel forms, or otherwise allude to incongruous functionality (for example, “wiring” of non-electronic parts). These apparent tensions may be particularly salient to my chosen field of ceramics, a medium interested in the notion of art versus craft.”

Frans Lotz is an artist who explores the traces of labour that are visible in a city and the layers of interaction that build up over time. Rips and repairs in chain link fences, and layers of rust and paint on fire escapes are reminders of the cycle of degradation, upkeep, vandalism, and repair. Drawing on blacksmithing and industrial steel work, his sculptures pay tribute to the often overlooked and undervalued objects that line the back alleys of a city.

Summer is humming along and we are gearing up for an exciting fall lineup of exhibitions and of course Art Toronto in October.

Anne Meredith Barry (1932-2003) was an award-winning printmaker and painter known for her landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador.

She was born in Toronto and in 1954 graduated from the Ontario College of Art. A career success came in 1969, when she was included in the prestigious City of Montreal Art Exhibition.

Barry visited Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time in 1971, after accepting a residency with the Outport Arts Foundation, a provincial organization that helped small communities establish arts programs. She spent the summer working and teaching children at Hibb’s Cove, Conception Bay. Deeply inspired by the province’s rugged beauty, Barry regularly returned to paint, make prints, and teach workshops at St. Michael’s Printshop and Memorial University’s Extension Service.

In 1986, Barry and her husband, John, moved to the province permanently. They bought and refurbished a printshop building in the small community of St. Michael’s, on the Avalon Peninsula’s Southern Shore. In the coming years, Barry contributed substantially to the arts community and produced a large body of distinguished work. Her art has been extensively exhibited in solo and group shows, and has toured nationally and internationally.

Let’s talk Robert Indiana…

One of the preeminent figures in American art since the 1960s, Robert Indiana played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, and Pop art. Indiana, a self proclaimed “American painter of signs,” created a highly original body of work that explores American identity, personal history, and the power of abstraction and language, establishing an important legacy that resonates in the work of many contemporary artists who make the written word a central element of their oeuvre.

A selection of artworks by Canadian artist Otto Rogers are featured in our back gallery corporate collection exhibition.

Otto Rogers was born in 1935 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Teachers College (1954) and received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (1958) and a Masters in Fine Art (1959) from the University of Wisconsin. As Professor and Head of the Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan (1959– 1988), Rogers helped revive the Emma Lake Artist Workshops, Saskatchewan (1971– 1987). From 1988 to 1998 Rogers lived in Haifa, Israel, where he served two five-year terms as a Counselor member of the International Teaching Center at the World Centre for the Bahai Faith. Following those years Otto lived and worked in Prince Edward County, Ontario until his passing in late April 2019.

Rogers’ works are found in over 1600 major public, corporate and private collections in North America, Asia and Europe including Art Gallery of Ontario, Edmonton Art Gallery, Mendal Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Montreal Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona Spain; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; Bank of Montreal; General Foods and Scotiabank.
