Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour and celebrate Turtle Island's diverse Indigenous cultures, and give our deepest thanks and appreciation to the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation).
This day also marks one year that the 'Syewá:l (Ancestors)' house post has overlooked the intersection of Georgia & Cambie from the plaza named šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn outside the QET. Carved by səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) artist Zac George Sko-Kay-Lem, this beautiful house post reflects the local Nations' rich history of land use in the Robson Street corridor for the hunting and harvesting of food, and it commemorates Zac’s late grandfather - celebrated actor, poet, champion of Indigenous Peoples’ rights Chief Dan George (1899-1981).
A few steps away on the plaza's Hamilton & Georgia corner, you will find an artwork on the lightbox entitled 'Sitting Bull in Vancouver' by critically acclaimed artist Dana Claxton, a member of the Wood Mountain Lakota First Nations. Part of the City's Platforms Public Art Project, the vibrant piece features portraits of Sitting Bull - 19th-century spiritual and political leader of the Lakota people - alongside re-articulation of his speeches, which the artist hopes will "inspire all to hear and see deeply and in the profundity of seeing and hearing, may we hear and see each other in good ways that inspire each other to walk gently."
We invite you to stop by to experience and enjoy.
