Odyssey Drawing Workshop Series no. 21 with Harvey Chan

TALES IN INK
Expressing the Tattooed Body with Ink & Gouache

What happens when tattoos, line, texture, colour and the human figure become part of the same visual story?

Join Harvey for a special life drawing session featuring tattooed live model Suze, and explore a more expressive approach to figure drawing through water-soluble media and gouache on toned paper.
Rather than simply recording the model, we’ll explore how marks, patterns and body contours can work together to create character, atmosphere and narrative.

🎨 You’ll explore: • Expressive line & gesture • Integrating tattoos with body structure • Texture & pattern as storytelling elements • Water-soluble drawing techniques • Gouache on toned paper • Combining drawing + painting while preserving the energy of the line • Developing your own visual language from life

🎨 Materials: Bring your preferred water-soluble drawing materials, reservoir brush pen, toned paper/cardboard, white gouache or poster colour, and a small mixing palette.
Harvey’s favourites include: Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle · Itoya Calligraphy Marker · ArtGraf Graphite
Drawing boards are provided. Harvey’s preferred Clairefontaine grey-toned mixed media paper (A3) is also available if needed.

Colour Magic - Strategy & Intuition
A 4-Week Workshop with Harvey Chan

In this four-week workshop, Harvey Chan shares his distinctive approach to working with colour, drawing on years of artistic exploration and experience. Participants will develop a strong foundation in the principles of colour while learning practical strategies for creating vibrant, expressive artwork across a variety of subjects, including portraiture, the figure, urban landscapes, and abstraction.

Through a series of guided exercises, Harvey will introduce both analytical and intuitive approaches to colour-making. By balancing strategy with instinct, students will learn how to make confident colour choices, simplify complex visual information, and identify what is most essential to communicate their personal ideas and emotions. The course is designed to help artists gain greater control, clarity, and freedom in their creative process, resulting in work that is both visually compelling and uniquely their own.

Ready to break out of traditional watercolour?

This workshop is designed for artists who want to explore a more expressive, dynamic approach to painting the human figure. Move past conventional techniques and discover how to combine direct drawing with fluid colour, guided by strong design and intentional use of colour.

🎨 What to Bring
We offered a drawing board with clips, which fits a maximum size of 11” x 15” pad/paper.
Suggested art materials:

Please bring your own watercolour set, brushes ( or reservoir brush ), water container, and watercolour paper pad or sheets ( 11”x15” ). For drawing, coloured pencils ( water soluble version for dissolving effect )

Sketchbook Exposition / Extravaganza by Nishant and Harvey

Urban sketcher Nishant, A.K.A. The Sneaky Artist and figurative artist Harvey Chan invite you to an intimate and revealing presentation of their artistic journeys.

Join us on Saturday, April 11th, from 3–6 PM in Mount Pleasant for a rare opportunity to experience the play, struggle, experimentation, and celebration embedded within the pages of their sketchbooks. This special showcase offers a glimpse into nearly one hundred previously unseen volumes—each bearing witness to the evolving practices, contrasts, and shared dedication of two distinct artistic voices.

For this one-day pop-up event, a curated selection of lino prints and loose original drawings will also be available for purchase.
