Happy June and the start of Pride Month!

City Opera Vancouver celebrates the q***r stories and artists who make up our community. Although pride lives year round, this month is an opportunity to highlight the incredible work that the people in our circles are creating.

Highlights from the past seasons include The Book of my Sins (2023), Hafu Project (2024), Chinatown (2022) and countless Opera Pubs!

Celebrating the last days of AAPI Heritage Month, reflecting on the stories of community, identity and home that City Opera Vancouver has been a part of over the years.

More than just one month of the year, City Opera Vancouver is always looking to engage and reflect the experiences of the people that make up our community.

From Opera Pubs, to stages productions and experimental triumphs, we're looking forward to how we can be a part of the growing variety of stories in opera and classical music.

This time last year, City Opera Vancouver was getting ready to present "Sophia's Forest", a story of immigration, home and family, which somehow seems more relevant than ever.

This production incorporated custom instruments, unique sounds, and really brought the feeling of "new" to this centuries old tradition of operatic storytelling.

Composer, Lembit Beecher, described the sound to Opera Canada as “electronically controlled acoustic sculptures, 16 wine glasses, each a different pitch, with 16 electronic fingers” that ring various tones, and a “digital audio station, midi-controlled, [from which he] can control the speed and the fingers.”

Four years ago, we posed the question "What if opera was brought directly to the community?"

Turns out, Vancouver agreed loudly and enthusiastically, becoming Vancouver's "best kept secret" (Vancouver Magazine).

Opera Pub at Fabrique St-George has grown into something truly special, and it's all because of the community that shows up month after month.

Let us know many Opera Pubs you made it to - Four years down and more to come!

If you have never been to Opera Pub before, make sure to check it out when it returns in the fall with performances on the first Tuesday of each month at Fabrique St. George in Mount Pleasant.

Artists included Vancouver Opera Young Artists (and alumni) - Lyndon Ladeur (2024-2026), Julia LoRusso (current), Marianne Bertrand (current), Mihnea Nitu (current), Luka Kawabata (2021-2023) & Perri Lo (2018-2019).

"Be curious. Be prepared. Be you." - Tracy Dahl

Artistic Director, Gordon Gerrard, sat down with soprano Tracy Dahl ahead of their upcoming performance together on June 25 and the conversation did not disappoint.

Swipe to read Tracy's thoughts on songs as old friends, curve balls, and the words she'd give any young singer dreaming big!
