Strathcona Harvest Festival

Strathcona Harvest Festival This year's Strathcona Harvest Festival is on Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 12pm - 4pm See you there!

The Strathcona Harvest Festival brings the small town country fair to the big city! Come celebrate the wrap up of the harvest season at this all-ages free community event. We'll have live local music, lots of homemade food and good old fashioned fun; a pie contest, a canning contest, potato sack race and lots of straw bales to play in. Bring some food to share and your picnic supplies: blanket, c

up, plate, cutlery and napkin. Don’t forget to stop by our Community Info Booths to learn more about urban gardening, raising chickens, preserving your harvest, urban homesteading and so much more!! We will have an amazing raffle to support the Strathcona Elementary Farm-to-Table Program.

There are lots of great events and workshops happening throughout the festival. http://blogs.vancouversun.com/2013/10/08/nourish-your-soul-and-lighten-your-footprint-at-sustenance-fest/

VANCOUVER - What if we grew our food more sustainably, developed greener sources of energy and became more self-sufficient and resilient? What if we did all that and the triple threat of climate change, peak oil and global economic instability all fail to materialize? Worst-case scenario: The wor...

So you know about our raffle and delicious pies but do you know about this amazing program that is getting off the ground at Strathcona Elementary. This is what we are fundraising for this year! Please brave the elements and support us!

The Farm To Table program at Strathcona Elementary School guides students from K-grade 7 on a journey to understand our food system through growing, preparing and eating local, homemade food. Individual classes are engaged in a variety of activities: tending the school garden, learning how to prepare nutritious meals and snacks, and one senior class makes regular visits UBC farm where they are mentored by a multi generational group of adults. With the help of donations, the program can continue to nurture a love of growing, preparing and enjoying wholesome food for years to come.

We are grateful to have the Lunch Peddlers coming out to the Harvest Festival this year to share some Veggie Chili with us and teach us about the important work they are doing here in the DTES.

WHAT IS THE DTES CENTRAL KITCHEN and THE LUNCH PEDDLER’S?
Established in 2006, The DTES Central Kitchen is a program run by the PHS Community Services Society that creates meals and delivers them to the most marginalized individuals in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. We are your neighbours and parents, chefs and farmers. We have been providing low-income, single room occupancy residents of the DTES a meal every day for the last 7 years. We deliver whatever is possible by bike and trailer, we partner with many other NGO’s and urban farms. We compost, we “community kitchen”, we provide employment and we have a tested investment in our community and in the health of the families.

WHO DO THE LUNCH PEDDLER’S DELIVER MEALS TO?
The people served by this program suffer from poor nutritional health. They are people who struggle with drug addictions, mental illness, homelessness and emotional/physical trauma. They are often blamed for their condition and treated as undeserving of a range of services including nutritional programs. Our program focuses on people living in single room occupancy (SRO) hotels, who are undernourished and underweight.
