The Honest Fishmongers

The Honest Fishmongers This makes for a riveting, personal experience for each audience member and strips the common fear of Shakespeare right out of you.

We play the ‘Shakespearean way’!– telling stories through the word and the actor, complemented by costumes, music and a space that is influenced by the playhouses Shakespeare wrote for; which focuses the action in a way that can fully immerse the audience in the story and language of the play. We are interested in being truthful to the original text and exploring ways to give the audience a unique

experience of the plays that marries the traditions of the Elizabethan era, with modern 21st century innovation. We work with extreme intimacy, and surrounding our audience with the play, creating an inclusive, surround sound, lively theatrical experience. We have discovered that when working in this type of space, the play becomes easier to understand, access, and subsequently more exciting for the audience.

Greetings Honest Fishmongers! Curious what we are up to these days? Read this for info on the next phase of the Fishmongers:

'THE HONEST FISHMONGERS: MARKET DAY MONDAYS'

Starting on November 9th, every Monday for the next three months from 10:00am-2:00pm I will be hosting sessions for anyone who is interested in being a part of the development of the next phase of the Honest Fishmongers. These sessions do not cost anything, nor to they guarantee involvement in our next full scale production. They will consist of work on Shakespearean material which delves into the text in the unique ways in which we have been developing over the past few productions.

We will be having these sessions at the Carnegie Centre on Main and Hastings. Part of our philosophy is a deeper connection with our audience during performance, and finding ways to engage audiences which have a broader range than your average crowd. We have been involved with the Carnegie and their programming for the past three years, and we will continue this relationship by hosting these workshop sessions there. Anyone from the Carnegie/East Side community is welcome to participate, or even simply sit in and watch. This is extremely valuable and imperative not only for our connection to this community, but also for the ability to have an audience potentially watching our work as we go through the workshops. Many of the exercises and explorations we will be delving into require a deeper connection to the audience so having possible on-lookers will be a big part of the work.

You are not required to come to all of the sessions, obviously, but I would hope to have a regular group eventually form out of these sessions, so the work can build upon itself. It will be very rigorous, so come prepared to work hard.

I will explain more about the growing philosophy of the Fishmongers and the practicalities of the sessions on the first day, and subsequently as the sessions progress.

PREPARATION FOR DAY ONE:
Simply bring in one or more Shakespeare monologues IN VERSE which you have prepared, ideally memorized. Stuff you have worked on in productions or as audition pieces are fine for this first session as a strong familiarity with the text is ideal. Following the first session I will be choosing scenes from a specific play(s) as we continue the work through December/January/February. The hope eventually is that we have a strong company of actors who we can pull from for shows and who are familiar with and confident in the various verse techniques and spontaneous play exercises which comprise a strong component of my work in theatre. And who are hungry to continue to practise, grow and push one's self to new heights as performers.

If you know anyone who you think would be interested in these sessions please feel free to forward them this post.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON COMING: for the first session, JUST COME. No need to let me know. We will be in the classroom on the 3rd floor of the Carnegie Centre across from the Learning Centre from 10am-2pm on Monday November 10th. Once you get to the third floor just turn right and you can't miss it. Please arrive promptly and be prepared to work through the four hour session. After our first session I will be getting more detailed with giving you scenes/speeches to prepare from week to week, but for the intro session just come with a bit of verse and a playful mood!

If you have any specific questions, feel free to message me at [email protected]. Otherwise just come on down to the Carnegie on November 10th and I'll see you there!

Cheers, and all the best. Hope to see you on the 10th!
