Chimerik 似不像 Chimerik 似不像 is an interdisciplinary collective that utilizes art & technology to make the world a be

**History:**

Chimerik 似不像 initially emerged as an interdisciplinary collective idea in 2009, co-founded by Sammy Chien & Shang-Han Chien in Vancouver, BC. In 2011, Chimerik 似不像 was incorporated in Taiwan as a company until 2014 where the company transitioned to non-profit arts collective. Since then, Chimerik 似不像 has been functioning as arts collective with the primary base in Vancouver, BC, seco

**Mission, Mandate & Core Value:**

Our mission is to create, engage and inspire works, platforms and activities that fosters interdisciplinary, intercultural and transnational collaborations through new media, digital technology, performance and multifaceted forms of art. We seek to empower underrepresented voices and intersectional identities to conjure, to resist, to q***r and to rise above the status quo. With a focus on sourcing the creative energy from the state of gratitude, love and joy, we believe that each individual can expand our potential as a collective to have an energetic ripple effect to the sociopolitical, artistic and spiritual impact to humanity at large. Although we are one small part of the bigger picture, we are all interconnected invisibly across dimensions. Innovation and creativity is our job to expand, connect, inspire, grow and holistically move our culture and thinking forward.

**Summary of history of development, creation, production, and dissemination:**

Thank you The Dance Centre for the highlight! Photo was taken at PuSh International Performing Arts Festival last year co-presented by Vancouver Art Gallery ❤️

"We are drawn to the possibility that performance could be both sacred and contemporary, and that technology could exist alongside ritual without diminishing its depth."

This month’s Member Spotlight is Sammy & Caroline Chien-MacCaull, Co-Artistic Directors of Chimerik 似不像.

Together they share their artistic path, the inspiration behind the work their company creates and the impact dance has had on their lives.

Gratitude to arts journalist Tessa Perkins Deneault for the beautiful writing in response to our show SI(x) .performance at

“Dig deep to find
The words buried
Yet falling through your fingers like
Sand slipping silently
All-consuming hexagonal hex
Spiritual, ritual, aflame
See yourself in the candlelight, see yourself in a flame
Push and pull as vibrations roll through you
Everything is vibration, timelines looping
It will get better
Still if you ask me
How I’m holding up, I’ll say
Never better

With flaming candles dripping wax onto a hexagonal stage of 2,000 lbs of sand, octophonic sound vibrating through the space, strobe lighting and a deeply personal emotional journey, Chimerik 似不像’s SI(x) is intense in every way.

Caroline Chien-MacCaull maintains a deep emotional intensity and grounded, fluid yet at times imperceptibly slow movement as Sammy Chien-MacCaull supports her performance behind a computer and soundboard. It begins tenderly and ends raw and profoundly vulnerable.

Words projected from above pile on top of Caroline as she becomes one with the sand, inviting us into her inner world, and we willingly accept.”

Tonight’s show is sold out as well but there are still tickets left for the added closing show on Sunday.

Sharing some moments from the rehearsal of “SI(x)” as we are getting ready for our world premiere at VIDF Vancouver International Dance Festival 2026 this weekend.

SI(x) emerges from our lived experience with mental health challenges and explores themes of Madness, perception, spirituality, care, and destigmatization. The piece moves between vulnerability and empowerment, asking how we hold one another through unseen or misunderstood conditions, and how expanded states of perception might also carry wisdom.

Mediumistic, ritualistic, state-based movement.
2,000+ pounds of sand.
Candle fire.
Interactive video projection.
Live spatialized and tactile low-frequency sound.

This work is meant to be felt in person.

Kiuryaq is finally showing in Vancouver! Presented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival with the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

This is an epic production with support from National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts NAC’s National Creation Fund and years of development of beautiful stories of northern Indigenous community. We are so honoured to join the team to support them on the new media/ projection design aspects. Sharing some of the BTS from our workshop developments last Spring. Hope to see you tonight!

Wed Jan 28 // 8PM
7PM Pre-Show Artist Talk & Reception
Chan Centre for the Performing Arts
6265 Crescent Rd, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1

Kiuryaq is a circumpolar performance exploring our relationship with the Northern Lights—“kiuryaq” in Inuvialuktun—created through collaboration among Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from Canada, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), and Sápmi (Norway).

Blending theatre, live music, and video design, Kiuryaq weaves northern stories into a landscape of light, memory, and cosmology. A performance of transformation and return, Kiuryaq is an invitation into the wisdom, warnings, and humour of the circumpolar region.

Today Jan 11 at 6pm PST, marks the closing performance of Program 2 of interplay_2026 and the final night of the festival’s online performance program. The works featured integrate playful audience interaction with existential philosophy responses, live DIY sound art in home-style performance settings, and Iranian diaspora storytelling through intimate desktop performances that unfold gently and powerfully in real time.

This moment feels especially important given the current reality in Iran, where recent government-imposed blackouts have cut off phone and internet communication between Iran and the outside world. We stand in solidarity with Iranian citizens and Iranian-Canadians who are deeply impacted by this disconnection from their families and communities. We hope you’ll show up to support the Iranian artists in this program and help further amplify their voices during such a critical time.

Jan 11 · 6pm PST (Sunday) Program 2:Elliot Vaughan - Existential Hotline .south Vincent Isabel - Empathie infonctionnelle [sound observations] Niloufar Samadi w/ Avideh Saadatpajouh - Glitch Under the Skin

If ticket price is a barrier, please don’t be shy to reach out. We’d love for more people to join us in supporting the artists, witnessing what they’ve created, and celebrating the closing night of the festival’s online component.
