📜 TWF TRIVIA CORNER

James Laidlaw Maxwell established the first Presbyterian church in Taiwan; he and his sons were also associated with the first Western hospital in Taiwan. Thomas Barclay introduced the first printed newsletter on the island, the Taiwan Church News, using the printing press that Maxwell donated to the church. David Landsborough III founded the Changhua Christian Hospital and performed the first skin graft in Taiwan’s history. Landsborough IV was born in Changhua, and continued his father’s medical legacy in Taiwan, serving the people of the island selflessly.

馬雅各創立了台灣第一間長老教會；他與其子女也參與建立台灣第一所西式醫院。巴克禮則利用馬雅各捐贈給教會的印刷機，創辦了台灣第一份印刷報刊《台灣教會公報》。蘭大衛創立彰化基督教醫院，並完成台灣歷史上首次皮膚移植手術。蘭大弼出生於彰化，之後也延續父親蘭大衛的醫療志業，在台灣無私地服務島上居民。

Nowadays, when we think of Scotland, the iconic tartan comes to mind. The colourful checkered wool is actually from Scotland’s Highland culture. Can you think of other regional specialties that have been used as national cultural symbols? Do these symbols pique our curiosity to learn more about cultural identity, or do they become stereotypes for a country?

In 1869, John Dodd, of Scottish descent, and Li Chun-sheng of Dadaocheng, Taiwan, shipped Taiwanese oolong tea from Taiwan to New York City in the United States, marking a milestone in the international expansion of the Formosa Oolong brand. The two men were respectively honoured with the titles ‘Father of Taiwanese Oolong Tea’ and ‘Father of Taiwanese Tea’.

1869 年蘇格蘭裔的約翰·陶德 (John Dodd) 與台灣大稻埕富商李春生將台灣烏龍茶從台灣運到美國紐約，建立台灣茶 (Formosa Oolong) 品牌拓展至國際的里程碑，兩人分別獲得「台灣烏龍茶之父」與「台灣茶葉之父」的尊稱。

Born in Canada in 1844, George Leslie Mackay was the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary to northern Taiwan. The Mackay family comes from the Scottish Highlands, immigrating to Canada in 1830. In 1872, Mackay and his companions arrived at what is now known as Tamsui.

馬偕家族是來自蘇格蘭高地，1830 年移居到加拿大，1844 年於加拿大出生，1872 年 3月9日馬偕與一行夥伴在滬尾（新北淡水）登岸。

2026 TAIWANfest is in a Dialogue with Scotland!

The Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century influenced many Scots, who in turn created legacies in both Canada and Taiwan. From the Scottish settlers in Canada to the Scottish missionaries in Taiwan, we see their impact in today’s education systems and medical institutions.

Today, Taiwan’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world. Did you know this was influenced by Scottish missionaries? In the 1800s, many Presbyterian missionaries came to Taiwan. During their respective Missions, they built clinics, schools, and even established the first printed press on the island. The impact of the Scottish Enlightenment can be seen across modern day Taiwan.

台灣現在擁有世界頂尖的醫療體系之一，你知道這其實也受到蘇格蘭傳教士的影響嗎？

十九世紀時，許多長老教會傳教士來到台灣。在傳教期間，他們建立診所、學校，甚至設立了台灣第一座印刷機構。直到今日，我們仍能在現代台灣社會中，看見蘇格蘭啟蒙運動所留下的深遠影響。

Dialogue with Scotland 與蘇格蘭對話

彰化流傳著一句俗諺「南門媽祖宮，西門蘭醫生」，指的就是來自蘇格蘭，創立了彰化基督教醫院的蘭大衛。

彰基1896年成立，在蘭大衛、蘭大弼父子等先驅的引領下，建立起台灣民眾獲得現代化醫療的基石。

這場講座將透過彰基的歷史，探索蘇格蘭啟蒙精神如何影響台灣醫學發展。

Changhua Christian Hospital opened in Taiwan in 1896. Through the guidance of pioneers such as Dr. David Landsborough III, the hospital is the foundation for accessible medical care and modern healthcare for the public on the island.

Director of the Changhua Christian Hospital Museum, Ya-Li Chen, will share how Scottish ideals influenced the growth of Taiwan’s healthcare system, and contributed to the enduring values of compassion, education, social responsibility, and community care that continue to shape Taiwanese society today.
