Dark Glass Theatre

Dark Glass Theatre And that action can change the world.

Dark Glass Theatre exists to tell stories that enable us to see, face to face, people we might not otherwise meet, thereby decreasing judgement, increasing compassion, and fostering empathy. We believe that one of the most damaging forces at work in our world is the demonizing of the “other.” Whether separated by trauma, social standing, religion, race, sexual orientation, geography, age, or gende

r, breaking down barriers begins with a willingness to see beyond labels like “oppressed” and “oppressor.” As we come face to face with another’s perspective, without judgement, we are empowered to act in love. We aspire to tell stories that build bridges between groups or individuals separated by discord or trauma, and to equip individuals to explore and express their own stories of forgiveness and healing.

We asked Kyle Jespersen what was his inspiration for writing CREAMPUFF and here's what he said:

"A whole lot of love and a whole lot of rage. Spending 10 years with a community of people who are very underserved or entirely ignored. It gave me a chance to see people’s hearts and their humanity. How could I not? Spending that much time with people. That’s where the love comes in. The rage – we just marked a decade – April 16 – since the government declared a public health emergency because of the toxic drug crisis. Things have just gotten worse. Over 50,000 Canadians have died, nearly 20,000 of those here in British Columbia. That’s where the rage comes in. The inspiration is just to try to move public opinion."

Be one of the first to witness CREAMPUFF, Kyle's powerful and personal story of working on the Downtown Eastside. Saturday, May 2nd at Studio 16 in Vancouver. You must be a Member of Dark Glass Theatre to attend - see our website or the link in the bio to sign up. See you there!

10 sleeps until CREAMPUFF and tickets are going fast!

CREAMPUFF is a play in progress about a health worker's experiences with harm reduction and supervised consumption sites on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Playwright and performer Kyle Jespersen brings a whole lot of heart and humanity to this important story. You won't want to miss it!

Kyle says...
"I think that people will see the world of drug use and drug users in a new light because my source material was a decade of hard-earned, intensely personal, direct experience. There’s very little info out there about harm reduction and supervised consumption sites to draw on. We have misperceptions to draw on that have stuck with us for decades – you know, people in movies tying leather belts around their arms and slapping their veins – all these misperceptions about how people manage this health issue. Writing this play has taken time and thoughtfulness, a lot of doubt, but a deep conviction that I’m sharing something that MUST be shared."

CREAMPUFF is a play by Kyle Jespersen, based on his experience working in Vancouver's vibrant yet distressed Downtown Eastside in a continuum of health and social services, from supportive housing to harm reduction and detox withdrawal management, for more than a decade.

We asked Kyle "Why should people see Creampuff?" and here's what he said:

"We all walk by people in our city who are bent over, slumped, unconscious, uncared for. Getting to know some of these people through this little play will give us a sense of understanding why and seeing how there might be a better way forward. People should see Creampuff because it’s utterly relevant."

Join us Saturday, May 2nd for the first look at this important play.

Meet the Playwright of CREAMPUFF: Kyle Jespersen

Kyle is a Vancouver stage and screen actor and playwright, as well as a healthcare worker with rich and varied experience in community-based services. He has spent over a decade with the Downtown Eastside community, initially working in shelters and supportive housing, then in harm reduction and overdose management sites.

CREAMPUFF focuses on the dissonance between our professed collective belief in human dignity and our evident increasing social inequity. It is about a woman in a booth at an injection site, and a mental health worker tasked with turning that booth over. CREAMPUFF asks, "What if we lean in, deeply, to challenging moments? What if we admit our share of it all?"

Join us on May 2nd for the first look at this brand new play. We are inviting members of Dark Glass Theatre Society (you can join online for $25!) to a sneak peek performance as we prepare for a fully mounted production in 26/27. Details in the bio or online: www.darkglasstheatre.com.

Your official reminder that you are invited to our One-Night-Only performance of our new production in progress CREAMPUFF on May 2nd.

"Creampuff is about a woman in a booth at an injection site, and a mental health worker tasked with turning that booth over. It is the story of one person who needs a space, and another person who is designated responsible for that space. When we are challenged, discomfited, or appalled, our society has long conditioned us to just keep things (or people) moving along, to walk past and ignore. Some of us seem conditioned to engage with judgement and anger. Creampuff asks, What if we lean in, deeply, to those challenging moments? What if we admit our share of it all?"

For $25 you can become a Member of Dark Glass and come see this provocative new work by award-winning actor Kyle Jespersen.
