“Maybe you’ll direct and devise from utilizing costume and design first, and everything else will follow”.
This conversation with mentor Steve Hill many years ago lit a fire in my mind. This, in parallel to once in a lifetime direction of both Cole Lewis and Barbara Tomasic all have their claws firmly grasped into this piece and my practice as a design director. I am in deep gratitude to you all, and this work would not exist without you.
Having the trust of creation with Matthew as my stunning collaborator and Jarin of What Lab, being able to juggle aspects of design and musical storytelling to f@gofcolour’s incomparable track was one of the most gorgeous and head scratching experiences I have had as an emerging director.
Why design? How does one start from design? How does design tell its own story, and what do we demand from design in the present and future? How is design a scene partner for performers beyond garnish and icing on their laborious work?
Holding and integrating aspects of my design and musical theatre histories in union with contemporary theatrical storytelling has been inspiring, challenging and electrifying to say the least while investigating these questions.
Being able to explore design in this innovative way, which is the joy of the work Matthew and I make and consume has been invaluable in this manner for us both. I can’t wait to see what is next for us and theatrecorps.
