Maya Garden

Maya Garden The idea of a Maya Garden is to keep the Mayan traditions and culture alive by continuing to grow Maya crops in Canada.

Since 2000, the Maya Garden has been at UBC Farm, managed by a group of Mayan families who fled Guatemala in the 1980s due to the civil war at the time. For thousands of years, Our ancestors, the Mayan people have worked the land planting corn, beans and squash (the three sisters). The main goal of these Mayan families was to keep the Mayan traditions and culture alive by continuing to grow Maya c

rops in Canada. Each season begins with a traditional Maya ceremony to ask permission to Mother Earth and the Creator to break the land and bless the seeds. Before we harvest corn, another ceremony is offered to thank the Creator and Mother Earth for all that has been produced. The garden continues to be a place for cultural sharing and sustaining ancestral practices.

International petition to protect the rain forest of Los Chimalapas (Oaxaca, south of Mexico) and deny the exploration permit for the mining megaproject called "Santa Marta", promoted by the Canadian company Minaurum Gold Coper. The existence and the self-determination of the Indigenous people who have inhabited and cared for these rainforests for thousands of years, cannot be negotiated.

Desde el H.
