Vancouver Youth Choir

Vancouver Youth Choir Award-winning choirs for singers ages 5-24 VYC choirs rehearse once a week, with many of these singers acting also as mentors in the younger VYC choirs.

In nine years, the organization has grown to more than 375 members in 7 ensembles, including the brand new “VYC Kindred” — a free choral program where newcomer and refugee youth learn about Indigenous music and culture. VYC members represent over 13 municipalities in the Lower Mainland, including 43 different high schools, 32 elementary schools and 5 different post-secondary institutions. The Vanc

ouver Youth Choir has quickly emerged as one of the most active and highly regarded youth choirs in the country. The choir has gained international attention for their adventurous programming, their commitment to performing and promoting music from underrepresented communities, and their outside-the-box approach to shows, where they employ unique venues, multimedia, movement, and staging. In addition to their regularly sold out season concerts, VYC performs regularly with professional choirs and solo artists in the city, and enjoys collaborations with artists from a wide variety of disciplines. VYC has been featured multiple times on CBC radio, presented concerts under the baton of Grammy Award-winning conductor Charles Bruffy, and in 2017 was awarded first prize at the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. The choir has headlined festivals in Europe and across North America, and in 2019 was invited to represent Canada at the American Choral Directors National Convention in Kansas City. In 2016, VYC launched the Vancouver Youth Choir Choral Series with Cypress Publishing, where they work to promote diverse Canadian voices on the international stage. In spring of 2023, members of VYC choirs will be traveling to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall where Carrie is guest conducting a concert of all Canadian choral music with choirs from across Canada. Also this spring, our Senior Choir will be representing North America as one of 10 choirs from around the world invited to perform at the WORLD SYMPOSIUM on CHORAL MUSIC in Istanbul, Turkey. This is a huge honour, and we are incredibly proud of these amazing young artists.

VYC Voices has space this fall for singers in Grade 11 through age 24, and no choir experience is needed!

Singers come together on Monday nights to make great music, build real vocal and musical skills, and be part of a close-knit community.

You’ll sing everything from pop and folk music to classical repertoire, and perform as part of VYC’s major concerts. No music-reading ability is required, either.

New singers have a short, friendly placement interview — not a formal audition.

VYC Kids East has space this fall for Grade 3 and 4 singers who want to make friends, build real musical skills, and feel proud of what they can do together.

Zoom placement interviews are available next week!

Singers explore a wide range of music, develop healthy vocal technique and musicianship, and learn how to listen, collaborate, and make music as an ensemble. There’s plenty of room for fun along the way.

No previous choir experience is needed, and the interview isn’t a test! It’s a short, friendly conversation that helps us get to know each singer and find the VYC ensemble that fits them best.

Earlier this summer, close to 100 of our current singers and alumni came together at the Chan Centre to record VYC's first album. It was an experience we will never forget.

One of our singers said it best: "No words can describe how thankful we are for this experience. Getting to record alongside some of our alumni was honestly so special. The energy in that room was pure connection, laughter, and community. It turns out that no matter how much time has passed, some things stay the same."

Thank you to producer Joanna Dundas, engineer Piotr Wieczorek, and James Perella, Lilith Didier, and the whole team at the Chan Centre, who took such good care of us. And to the supporters who made this album possible: we are so grateful, and we cannot wait for you to hear it.

Does your child love to sing?

VYC Tiny is the Vancouver Youth Choir’s introductory choir program for children in Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Classes are playful and active, with lots of singing, movement, listening, and song games. There’s plenty of room for play and silliness, while young singers begin to discover how rewarding it can be to listen, work together, and make music they’re proud of.

There’s still room in our October–March Tiny classes:

VYC Tiny 1 for K - Grade 1
Westside classes on Monday or Wednesday
Eastside class on Wednesday

VYC Tiny 2 for Grade 2
Westside class on Monday
Eastside class on Wednesday

No previous choir experience is needed. Classes are 45 minutes once a week, and there’s no home practice.

For young singers who love music, VYC Tiny is a joyful place to begin. Register today!

New June interview dates have just been added for VYC Kids, for singers entering Grades 3–4 in September.

Our upcoming interview spots were booked until late July, so we’ve opened more times over the next few weeks for singers hoping to join VYC.

Interviews are friendly and low-pressure. They are a chance for us to get to know each singer, hear them sing a little, and find the right fit. They are not a make-or-break audition. There is a place in VYC for everyone who wants to sing with us.

Rehearsals are offered on the East and West sides of Vancouver, and bursaries are available for families with financial need.
