Our Kokoro improvisation series give us opportunities to express ourselves in the moment with the fantastic stimulus of improvising jazz musicians of the highest caliber. We never know what they are going to play or what our responses will be. We know that it is always a conversation—a call from them and a response from us that is also a call back to them. It is harmony and dissonance colliding and colluding in both music and dance. It is exciting and adrenalin-producing enjoyment for us, the musicians, and our audiences.

From July 3rd to July 16th, 2026, Kokoro Dance presents the 32nd annual Wreck Beach Butoh Performance Workshop. This intensive two-week butoh workshop led by Kokoro Dance’s Artistic Directors, Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, and is open to anyone over the age of 18.

The performances on July 15th and 16th take place, in the n**e, on Wreck Beach at the foot of the #4 Trail below the UBC Museum of Anthropology. A maximum of 30 participants will be accepted into the workshop. The workshop takes place weekdays from 9:00am-4:00pm daily at the KW Production Studio. Participants should bring comfortable exercise clothing, a water bottle, and towel. No previous dance experience or exposure to butoh is required, but the intensive is physically challenging. If you want to participate, it is advisable to come to Kokoro’s ongoing dance classes or find physical conditioning elsewhere.

Starting from day one of the workshop, we will build a butoh score built on interior imagery that will create both an individual and a group journey, 60 to 70 minutes in length. It will be performed on sand and in water whether it is sunny or rainy on Vancouver’s largest stage with lighting, set, sound, and costumes by Mother Nature. Kokoro Dance’s Wreck Beach Butoh experience is a life-altering opportunity to discover your own original dance expression.

2026 Wreck Beach Butoh Performance Workshop • July 3rd - July 16th, 2026.

All workshop dates which are hosted at KW Studios at 111 West Hastings.
Workshop daily schedule is 9:00am-4:00pm with a one hour lunch break.

$50.00 for registration and is non-refundable.

New Workshop fee is $500.00 (taxes incl).

Previous attendee fee is sliding scale $0.00-$500.00 (taxes incl).

Sound can be loud, but earplugs can be provided free of charge. Lighting is generally lower but can be adjusted and raised to accommodate people who need brighter venues.

This event takes place on the unceded and occupied homelands of the Coast Salish peoples of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are immensely grateful for being allowed to continue to live, work, and play on these lands.

KW events are NOTAFLOF (No one turn away for lack of funds) . NOTAFLOF tickets are of limited capacity. Please consider your financial need relative to folks in the DTES community where we reside before asking to pay less. We practice the policy NOTAFLOF specifically to allow access to folks negatively impacted by gentrification projects within the DTES community. If you are a student or low income worker, please consider saving up for the next show as the artists and KW staff are also low income workers.
